  • Well-kept, family-friendly pop-up site 15 minutes’ drive from Durham
  • Locomotion, Adventure Valley and Diggerland all 25 minutes’ drive
  • Off-grid pitches with countryside views; shop five minutes’ drive
If you’re after rural, well, the pop-up campsite at Grey Gables – found in the grounds of a vicarage, no less – is certainly that. The camping fields here straddle high ground and have rural County Durham views in all directions. You’d never believe that all the historic attractions, shops and dining options of Durham city itself were only 15 minutes’ drive away. Anyway, this quiet spot has easy access from the A1 road and makes a relaxing base suitable for dog walks in the countryside, days out wildlife watching, exploring by mountain bike or hiking the Weardale Way along its namesake river. All is clean and well maintained on site, which has portable toilet facilities and a supply of (non-drinking) water available. Please make sure you bring your own drinking water for that all-important morning cuppa, and as the place is very much off-grid, torches and batteries are a good idea too. Barbecues and campfires are allowed for that real camping vibe, so it’s time to get sizzling the sausages or veg skewers; you can pick up what you need for the grill from the local convenience store in Bowburn (five minutes’ drive), and there’s a regular bus service if you feel like ditching the car for the short hop into Durham city centre.
