Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Well organised pitch layout in cute fields with gravel areas if you are worried about your vehicle getting stuck, otherwise park up at your pitch.

Disliked: Toilet block, although quite functional (i.e. Water temperature and pressure was good), is in dire need of updating. Cobwebs and bare plasterboard covered in black spot is not really good enough this day and age. Sadly, the Lakes at Bank Holiday time is now bursting at the seams and with that come the hordes of dickheads who roll into the campsite at 11:30, pissed up, swearing and giving not the slightest toss about anyone else. This place is no exception. NOT a fault of the campsite as these morons get everywhere.

Disliked: The toilets were very old and cold, the showers didn’t have doors, the men’s toilets had a hair dryer and the lady’s didn’t. One building had metal on the roof that had come loose and was very noisy in the wind. On arrival there is a sign that says do not pitch call the number first to be given a number. We called the number multiple times which went to voicemail on all of the times so just ended up pitching up anywhere

From the manager: Thank you for your review, which is the worst I've received this year. 10/10 and 8/10 are hard to answer, a 4/10 however, is... You're totally right, of course in almost everything that you say... When you were here the temperature was, as best 12 C, the toilets are not heated, this is camping.. and certainly the facilities are old, but you could also have said that the showers are hot and free and that everything works... The roof on the big shed has suffered in the recent gales, I haven't been able to fix it, hopefully now the weather is calmer, that may happen soon. Yes, I miss calls, like everyone else. If you look carefully, there are doors on all showers and toilet stalls, not sure why you need to write this untruth - should have gone to specsavers, lol, ... There isn't a hairdrier in the gents toilets, someone must have moved it there, it was only one night, I returned it to the ladies in the morning, when I cleaned, I don't know why someone was inconsiderate enough to move it and not return it. Real men don't use hairdriers.... I'll probably get cancelled for that remark., but who cares?... I'm 63 and retiring soon... Back to the subject... Cleanliness is a lot better than 2/10, Wifi, depends on your network, I don't have wifi for the site, Child friendliness - you don't have children anyway, Customer service - ask me for help..., Facilities etc - they all work, Accommodation, not really relevant Summary...I'm 8.6/10. I keep trying. This is a traditional campsite and advertised as such, you wouldn't visit again? - not bothered, wouldn't recommend to your friends - Again, not unduly concerned, perhaps they can make their own minds up...

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely scenery and area around. Friendly site owner who was more than happy to help. Facilities were easily accessible. Pitches were more than enough room for both our car and tent with canopy.

Disliked: Pitch given to us was not level and therefore had to be quite close to a neighbouring tent. This may be due to recent wet weather conditions however! Not a great deal to do for visitors in nearby town but lots of lovely places to walk. Bathroom area could do with being checked more often and only two stalls meant a wait most times.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Great location for hikes in the lakes, friendly farmer that towed us out when we got stuck in the mud, as the weather didn’t like our camper van. Good facilities for washing up cooking utensils. Friendly atmosphere and great Location. Dogs also very welcome.

Disliked: The local pub was fully booked so no food available, would have been more organised next time and would have booked a table for food.

Local attractions

Buttermere and Loweswater are the nearest lakes to Whinfell Farm Camp Site, each with accompanying villages and circular lakeside walks. Loweswater is managed by the National Trust and has rowing boats available for hire. On land, the western lakes area is as full of things to do as its more central counterparts, with activities such as golfing, cycling, shoreline horse rides and hiking around the Roman heritage, valleys and peaks of Eskdale, Wasdale and the coastal village of Ravenglass. Also take time for an afternoon or day among the mountain bike trails and forest walks of Whinlatter, named by the Forestry Commission as England's only true mountain forest. It's one of the Super 6 mountain bike trails and has the longest purpose-built MTB track in the whole Lake District; find out more in the Whinlatter Forestry Centre. Keswick's Honister Slate Mine is the last working slate mine in England and is open to visitors who come for one of the several tours and to climb to the top of the mountain using the original miners' path. And if it's sea you want to see, the Cumbrian coastline at Allonby is about 12 miles away.
