  • Small, quiet and friendly farm site with spectacular views
  • Lots of room and spacious pitches
  • Several walks direct from the farm including onto the Howgill Fells
For splendid walks among grazing animals, and nights gazing up at big open skies, Low Greenside Farm is an excellent bet for an outdoorsy break of the old-school variety. This small, quiet and friendly site is on a sheep farm in a level field, with spectacular Cumbria countryside views in all directions: the owners say it's 'camping as it used to be', with spacious pitches set around the edge of a large field. There are assorted hill and valley hikes from the site, where up-to-date info is on hand to help you pick places to walk, eat and visit, as well as sorting countryside events and day trip ideas. There's direct access onto the Howgill Fells for long walks, where sheep and ponies will keep you company; the Lakes, the Dales and the lovely Eden Valley are all close by for days out. Campfires are allowed in the hearths provided with logs available to purchase at the farm, and guests can also blaze up a barbecue on site. Ravenstonedale village – a five-minute walk from the farm – has two country pubs with riverside gardens, both serving food and real ales. For foodie supplies you might also want to check out the nearby farmers’ market, or drive over to one of the surrounding towns and villages.

Local attractions

There are plenty of interesting local walks and bike rides in the region – several of which start at the farm gate – with refreshments to be had at pubs and cafés en route. The Howgill Fells are a few minutes' stroll up the lane. There's excellent access to both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, with the equally scenic Eden Valley another option for those looking to avoid the crowds. Close to the site, you can go pony trekking or trout fishing – catch one and barbecue it later (the trout, not the pony...) Ravenstonedale village has a playground, public tennis court, nine and 18-hole golf course and a small art gallery to take in. The market towns of Kirkby Stephen, Appleby and Sedbergh are all within hiking distance. For some food and tipples to finish the day with back at base, head to Hawes (40 minutes' drive) for cheese from the Wensleydale Creamery and craft beers from the Yorkshire Dales Brewery.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: A lovely spacious campsite with great views and great facilities. Brand new shower block, free hot water, free use of fridge and freezer plus free phone charging sockets in a locker so you can safely leave your phone charging. Good recycling facilities and the use of wheelbarrows for transporting your gear to your chosen spot. Only downside is the noise of traffic from the nearby A road. Would stay here again, it’s one of the best campsites I’ve stayed on for many years.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Loved the eco friendly and sustainable facilities - compost lol, recycling, compost bin, sustainably sourced wood. Also, the facilities were spotless and seemed brand new. Very spacious pitches with a fire pit each. Short walk to nice local pub and very nice walks straight from the site.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful campsite. Fantastic facilities with hot showers, wonderfully clean toilets and a nice space to do your washing up. Campfire with every pitch makes for a wonderful night enjoying the peace and quiet with the incredible dark skies. The small book of nine walks straight from the campsite was such a unique touch, we'll be back to do the other eight for sure!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks Chloe, we're so pleased you enjoyed your stay and one of the 'Nine Grest Walks from Low Greenside'. It's a lovely area for walkers of all abilities and you'll be very welcome when you come back to do some more of them!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Cars being separated from tents The views The washing up and charging facilities

Disliked: Hated that there is no mobile signal for miles on Vodafone or O2 - family and business responsibilities made this stressful without a WiFi service Queues for the toilets Shower was scalding hot (think the cold water wasn't getting mixed)

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Gill Thank you for your review. I'm glad that you enjoyed the spacious pitches and the stunning views. Unfortunately we can't do much about the phone signal on vodafone or O2. Other networks can get highspeed 4g here. We don't provide WiFi as we are a back to basics campsite, although this may be something we look into in the future. It was a very busy weekend when you stayed and occasionally there can be a short queue but it doesn't happen very often and only at those peak times in the morning. I'm aware of the one shower that can get hot (not scolding), the tempreture control is just a little stiff but it still works. A new shower unit is already on order and will be replaced very soon. I appreciate the feedback. All the best with your travels.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Very friendly & relaxed welcome. Strong emphasis on being green, so recycling & green ablution & toilet facilities provided. Wheelbarrows provided to transfer camping equipment from your car to your pitch which saves a lot of lugging. Highly recommend staying here.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The shower facilities were amazing, plenty of plug sockets and a good size fridge & freezer. We loved how much space there was between tents which allowed for privacy. The hosts were fantastic, really kind and accommodating. Overall amazing place to stay, would 100% come again.

Disliked: Would be better to have a few more camp fires accessible.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely comments. It was a pleasure to meet you and please do come again. There's always a campfire for everyone but there's also lots of room between our large pitches, as you say, so it's all very spacious. Camping as It Used to Be!
