  • Adults-only shepherd’s hut in a quiet village on the river Crouch
  • A 15-minute drive from Maldon; 15 minutes’ walk to a nature reserve
  • Paddleboarding available in the marina; two minutes’ walk to a pub
How’s this for a day: waking to birds calling, a walk around the local nature reserve and a cosy lunch at the pub two minutes’ walk away? Later, you might descend upon Maldon’s many foodie venues and go dinghy sailing or settle in early for a homecooked meal in the shepherd’s hut at White House Farm… The adults-only hut you’ll be staying in is in a two-acre field with a thick hedge. It’s a rural patch of land, so expect to hear plenty of birds or maybe spot muntjac passing through. Settle quietly on the garden furniture during the rutting season and you might hear red deer herd stags showing off. Inside the hut are a comfy kingsize bed and an ensuite, with bed linen and towels provided. Next door, the separate kitchen hut has a fridge, gas hob, cooker and other kitchen equipment. The main rules are no pets, no kids and no smoking. The nearest village os North Fambridge, just on the edge of the gorgeous Dengie Peninsula. There’s a marina on the river Crouch for paddleboarding outings (just book ahead – it’s only five minutes’ walk from the hut). The Blue House Farm nature reserve, 15 minutes’ walk away, has a four-kilometre walk past three hides for spotting migratory birds and wildfowl. The local pub may well be another spot you become quite familiar with, since it’s only two minutes’ walk away. Cosy fireplace seating, a beer garden for fairer weather and a varied menu? Sorted. Plus, they’re happy to serve breakfast for guests by prior arrangement. If you're on the lookout for a quick break from London, this is a good spot – a train station 15 minutes’ walk away has links to Liverpool Street Station within an hour.

Local attractions

In foodie-friendly Maldon (15 minutes’ drive), it might be tempting to eat all day, but the historic quay and harbour are also handy for those wanting a taste of yachting, dinghy sailing or paddleboarding. For more tasty treats, try the Tiptree Jam Museum (half an hour) or set off to Mersea Island (45 minutes) to sample its famed oysters. Burnham-on-Crouch (15 minutes) to the east is a quieter waterside spot with a yachting centre and peaceful strolls. Detour to Clayhill Vineyard (10 minutes) if you fancy some local wine or a bookable tasting or tour. Also within easy reach for outings are the likes of RHS Garden Hyde Hall and Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome (both 15 minutes). Southend-on-Sea (40 minutes), of course, has livelier seaside scenes, with a cliffside funicular that’s been running for centuries, plus the attractions of the world's longest pier.
