Camping in Kent is a fine option indeed, whether you're after family-friendly breaks in the Garden of England, wine-tasting vineyard voyages or just a quiet rural break within easy reach of London. Hever Camping, a family-run site half a mile from the small village of Markbeech, makes an excellent base for all three – and with a good dose of history thrown in too… Managed by sisters Sarah and Gina, the farm where Hever Camping is based has been in the hands of the same family for over 100 years, meaning your hosts are very knowledgeable about the local area. Originally a dairy farm attached to the Hever Castle estate, the cows are now long gone – but the grand grounds of the castle and its gardens are easily accessed on foot in around 20 minutes. Hever Camping is split into two parts – Farm Field, with toilets, showers and a washing-up area (with hot water) and the more remote Pond Field, with toilets and cold water. The farm is home to a woodland, a pond, trees that are great for climbing and a Wendy house for the kids. On-site angling is available, with likely catches including carp and roach. Firewood is sold here too (subject to availability). Nearby off-site amenities include Markbeech's pub and farm shop (10 minutes' walk from the site gates) and Cowden railway station (20 minutes), where direct trains can take you to London Bridge in as little as 45 minutes.

Farm field primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Stayed on the campsite for 3 nights with young children and teens. It was in a nice location, lots of greenery, local attractions and lots of local pubs and walks.

Disliked: Sadly, the site only had 1 drinking water tap, no way of drying your hands after going to the bathroom, the bins were overflowing and some furry friends enjoyed a rummage. There is no staff office/reception on site so when new campers arrived, the current campers had to do the orientation (which we didn’t mind but also found it strange). The campsite is located in a flight path so planes go overhead late into the night and early morning so pack the ear plugs.

Pond field primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Field was huge and lovely, very remote, although long lane to get there very bumpy and excessively slippery when wet. Hosts were really nice, very helpful and drove round daily to check all was well and if logs needed.

Disliked: Sadly the few toilets that were there were weren't very pleasant. I'm not sure whether through lack of cleaning or other campers just not caring. Also, we had music blaring until after 11 both nights, I wish people that wanted that would realise a totally remote field is the wrong place.

Pond field primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We loved the friendly welcoming from staff and the offer for fire wood and fire lighter at a very reasonable price. We really enjoyed our night at the farm, it seemed inclusive with a variation of families, couples and larger groups. The facilities were kept clean and well maintained - we loved the added extra of hot water on this site and a place to do washing up. Overall a very nice place which we will certainly return too.

Pond field primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Big open space in the pond field with freedom to camp wherever we wanted and can enjoy a campfire. Staff very friendly and welcoming. would come back again

Disliked: run down and basic facilities in the Pond Field site And no showers had to drive to the farm field site to have a shower. internet/phone signal is very limited Poor maintained road/track leading to field hard to access unless you have 4x4 or high ground clearance vehicle

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We totally take on board your comments, and are excited to say, we have purchased a new toilet/ shower block to compliment Pond Field. Im sorry it wasn't up and running for your visit but it was delayed due to the annoyingly ongoing wet weather we have been experiencing which obviously inhibits large machines from accessing the fields without making unsightly ruts- and we take pride in our lush rolled fields! We are pleased to see you would visit again, and look forward to you trying out the new facilities and giving us your feedback.

Would happily stay again!

Farm field primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The space options, shower facilities, the staff were so friendly.

Disliked: Sadly the toilet facilities, doors didn’t lock, lack of toilet roll, also waited 2 hours for a fire pit but they are small.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Chris- Thank you for your feedback. I apologise for the doors not locking- we were unaware of an issue as no-one had mentioned they couldn't be locked- but rest assured, we will check them and rectify immediately if there's an issue - privacy is key when you need a wee! Sadly we found some campers had pulled out alot of the toilet paper and left it strewn on the floor- but I assure you we do visit and top up facilities numerous times in the day. The firepits we do lend out for free, and we have numerous sizes and shapes- I'm sorry you found it small, and yes you shouldn't have to wait 2 hours for it- we usually do a log drop at 5pm, and provide the pits at the same time- I will look into this thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Farm field primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Easy to find. Check-in was fine, phoned when I arrived at the yard as per the instructions. The farm field showers were spacious which was nice, and great to have a hot shower, and the fresh air coming in too. Two washing up areas and a separate drinking water point. Plenty of toilets for the size of the field. The two ladies running it were lovely and friendly, helpful info about local footpaths and have small local maps for sale. Great view from the top of the field.

Disliked: Would have been nice to have a way to recycle other than taking home. Not a dislike as such but no small bin in the washing up areas so make sure to have your own rubbish bags.

Local attractions

First port of call around these parts simply has to be the excellent Hever Castle (20 minutes' walk or five minutes' drive): the childhood home of Anne Boleyn has plenty of attractions to keep you busy for a full day out, including a water maze, playgrounds and a fab series of summer events including things like jousting tournaments and open-air theatre shows. For a bit more on the local history front, head to Chartwell (15 minutes' drive), a long-term haunt of Winston Churchill, or to Penshurst Place (10 minutes), where you can tour the medieval manor or trot around the estate's 100 acres, taking in the lakes, adventure playground and woodland trails along the way. More of the past is on display in Chiddingstone (five minutes), a well-preserved Tudor village managed by the National Trust. Need something to keep the kids entertained? Edenbridge (10 minutes) has a well-maintained public leisure centre nearby if they've got excess energy to burn off, while trips to top local theme parks like Diggerland Kent (55 minutes) or zoos like the UK Owl and Raptor Centre (20 minutes) could also be in the offing.
