  • Simple farm site with sustainable facilities on the Lizard Peninsula
  • Within a 1.5-mile walk of clifftop walks on the South West Coast Path
  • Within 10 minutes' drive of Kynance Cove and Kennack Sands
'Timeless and unique' are a couple of adjectives used by guests to describe Elowen Fild on the Lizard Peninsula, but there are many more words that could apply to this fab site about half an hour’s walk from Cadgwith Harbour too. ‘Secluded’ is one, as the park is inside Treveddon Farm in a quiet part of the countryside, while ‘off-grid’ is another as it has eco-friendly compost toilets and solar showers built inside traditional oak frames with slate floors and skylights. The word ‘stunning’ also captures just how lovely the scenery is here: lie back on the grassy green grounds to see the swallows fly overhead while waiting for a spectacular sunset or wander around a mile and a half to the South West Coast Path and watch the waves crash against the area’s towering cliffs. When it comes to getting home after days out and about further afield, the park is accessible on bus 34 from Redruth train station (making environmentally friendly stays even more of a possibility). Ask the driver to stop outside the site’s entrance, a lane marked with the Treveddon Farm camping sign. And for food when back on base? As the site’s relatively rural, it’s best to bring most ingredients with you to prep at the utility area’s worktop, which also has a large Belfast sink with solar heated hot and cold taps for washing up after meals.

Primitive grass tent campsite (backpacker, no cars)

Liked: Excellent eco-camping site with no motorhomes, caravans etc. Just a field in a great location close to the scenic coastline. Great 'basic' facilities that are all you need and a lovely, helpful site owner. Recommended for minimalist camping if you want to keep it simple but still pleasureable.

Primitive grass tent campsite (backpacker, no cars)

Liked: Beautiful secluded campsite which is located in a well maintained and picturesque location . I have been to this site before and will continue to visit for years to come as this is one of my favourite parts of Cornwall. The site itself is well maintained with good facilities and the owners are always happy to help. The campsite is very close to the gorgeous Village of Cadgwith Cove and not far from Helston and Coverack .

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Sure, you could use this site as a jumping-off point for touring the whole of Cornwall, but the Lizard Peninsula has more than enough to keep you entertained for a week or so. As you’re likely down south for the beaches, begin your break by taking snaps of Kynance Cove (10 minutes’ drive), one of the loveliest seaside spots in the whole of the county, or haul the kids along to the bigger, family-friendly Kennack Sands (10 minutes). Done with the coast? Entertain the younger ones some more with the cute critters at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary (20 minutes) or, if you’re travelling sans the small fry, embrace adult-friendly activities such as walks on the South West Coast Path, perhaps down by the National Trust’s Old Serpentine Works (five minutes). Other cultural spots to saunter towards include the Museum of Cornish Life (20 minutes) for learning about the local area and the Terence Coventry Sculpture Garden (20 minutes). If you prefer your outdoor green spaces to be of the traditional variety, totter around the 26-acre sub-tropical Trebah Garden (35 minutes) instead.
