Walks, mountain bike trails, horse riding, fishing, golf… if it’s a break full of outdoor activities you’re after, you’ve come to the right part of the world. Family-run Queensland Holiday Park is in the Carrick Hills in the Ayrshire countryside, and it’s got easy access to all sorts of outdoor pursuits. One of the best places to get out and about nearby is the Galloway Forest Park – you’ll be able to see it from the holiday park, but it’s even better to get over there for walks, bike rides and stargazing evenings (it’s the largest Dark Sky Park in the UK). Elsewhere nearby there are several golf courses and plenty of places to go fishing – be it fly-fishing, coarse fishing or sea fishing. Outdoor life is very much present on site, too – the park is filled with mature trees that are home to wildlife including red squirrels, deer, owls and pheasants. It’s worth noting that midges are also keen on this place, so you’d do well to bring insect repellent in midge season. To keep things peaceful for both animals and guests, there’s a noise curfew of 11pm-8am that all visitors are asked to adhere to. Access to the park is easy, as it’s just off an A-road, about five minutes’ drive from the village of Barrhill. There’s a shop, a playground and a family-friendly pub (with food) in the village, and you can use the railway station (and the bus service that stops outside the park) to get around by public transport. Further facilities are in bigger Newton Stewart (25 minutes’ drive) and Girvan (20 minutes), which has a beach and ferries to Ailsa Craig.
