Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: Camping with tent... The site is fantastic and plenty of players areas for kids, the cove is nice and secluded. The prices for food and drinks are reasonable so not like the well known holiday parks where they rip you off, the convenience store has everything you need and even those camping essentials you may have forgot like we did (windbreaker). The camping facilities were spotless i.e, toilets, showers and sink for cleaning dishes etc, all in all everything we needed for our camping trip.

Disliked: We found it a bit impersonal regarding everything was online from booking to check in and even getting your plot number without human interaction, even ordering food/drinks and even takeaway was done by touch screen (just a small peeve) The biggest issue was the noisy crows, there is a wooded area where the tent/tourers are and the crows have made a rookery so the constant noise was off putting when trying to sleep, only quiet from around midnight til 4am. This issue will put us off coming back camping.

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay at auchenlairie. .the Toilet/ showers where nice and clean, the site has an arcade, swimming pool. A bar and a very short walk to the beach where we went fishing. our pitch was next to a lovely little stream

Disliked: The crows haha literally thousands of them and they are very noisy. Also our pitch wasn't level we never bothered to relocate, I'm sure the staff would have give us a different one if we asked

Liked: Excellent site. Very clean. Beautiful views, friendly staff and lots to do. Great if have dogs as dog friendly and although cannot use restaurant can take dogs in the Sports bar.

Disliked: Asked to leave the pool when time was up despite being pretty empty, but to be honest am sure they would have allowed us to stay longer if we had asked.

Liked: Spacious, lovely walk down to the beach plenty of room. Clean bathrooms if you use the brick building. Swimming pool is lovely and warm. Shame the booking system didn't work at all. 3 times we turned up to be told we weren't booked in. Luckily there was room but very annoying.

Disliked: The only place I dislike the birds waking me up in the morning. Crows do not make the best bird song to wake up to!! The Portaloo style showers didn't lock properly or you get locked in when the lock jams Something to be aware off. People kept letting young children down to the beach unattended. As much as its lovely it's definatly not a place for young children to be alone.

Liked: We arrived on a tench pitch which was small but adequate for our needs. We made use of all facilities within the site and were also pleased that we were allowed barbecue and campfire without any indifference from anyone (campfire a must when camping). Toilet block was immaculate and was cleaned regularly , local shop was well stocked. All in all a great little trip for us and my wee dog. Thank you. We'll come back some time.

Liked: Good pitches, clean site, communications and no check in was good. Laundry area good. Nice swim in the sea. Shop on site. Friendly people.

Disliked: Crows! These helped to drown out the road noise though but they are incessant, the site is next to the main A74. There were a few people not obeying the dogs on lead rule which with a large reactive dog made for some stressful situations. Not a lot to do if you haven’t got transport off the site (ie the van isn’t moveable once setup) no footpaths off the site. The 2 small beaches are just that.

Disliked: The pitch wasn't flat/level. The crows constant squawking from 4am pretty irritating. Some static caravan user opposite pitch p005g was letting her dog dump on the pitch caught her a few times so gave her some verbal. Also smelt weed been smoked when we arrived.

Local attractions

Trad fans, pop fans, bibliophiles and foodies can indulge their passions easily in the area: many local pubs have regular traditional music sessions and the region has a good handful of festivals of all flavours including the Wigtown Book Festival and Stranraer Oyster Festival. On the music front, tap your foot at the Galloway and Portpatrick folk festivals, both easy to get to from Auchenlarie, or go along to one of the folk clubs which meet regularly in Dalbeattie and Stranraer. By day, dander around the rest of Dumfries and Galloway for a range of things to do like coastal strolling around Wigtown and Luce Bay, fishing, championship golf courses and blossoming at the county’s public gardens and their exotic specimens flourishing in Galloway’s mild climate. Logan Botanic Garden on the Rhins of Galloway is filled with southern hemisphere plants and palm trees; take a hike up the park’s hill afterwards for views to take your breath away over the Rhins to the Galloway Hills. Red deer, wild goats and red kites are a few sights to see in nearby Galloway Forest Park to the north of Auchenlarie, Britain’s biggest forest park at 300 square miles, and with forest trails, lochside cycle paths, wildlife centres, horse-riding and mountain biking all to hand/hoof. The 24-mile Red Kite Trail around Loch Ken is level enough for cycling and has six outdoor viewing points, four hides and a visitor centre with CCTV open in summer; if you’d like to look skywards by night, Galloway Forest Park is the only Dark Sky Park in the UK and one of only four in the world. Dazzle your little darlings at the award-winning Creetown Gem Rock Museum, a jewel of an attraction near Newton Stuart with gemstones, crystals, rocks and fossils on display, interactive exhibits and the glow of the Crystal Cave. It’s one of several museums in Dumfries and Galloway including the Museum Newton Stewart, telling the history of the county, and the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries, telling the story of the bard. To see historical sights on site, there are castles, abbeys and vintage buildings all around, such as Cardoness, Carsluith and Threave castles, Dundrennan Abbey, the motes of Mark and Urr, and towers at Drumcoltran and Orchardton.
