  • Family-friendly campsite near Angoulême in north Dordogne countryside
  • A 10-minute drive from Brantôme en Périgord; 15 from Le Parc Sauvage
  • Restaurant, swimming pool, a mini-golf course and pétanque on site
Found in the grounds of a lovely old manor house, La Charrue is in the beautiful Périgord Vert area of the north Dordogne. It’s a family-run campsite within 45-minutes driving distance of Angoulême and Périgueux, handily located near one of the main routes south to Spain – you are welcome to break your journey overnight or stay for a few days to explore the area. Simple grass pitches are shaded by trees, and facilities include a shower block and washing-up area with a washing machine (charges apply) so you can keep everybody clean and tidy on your camping break. And there’s so much to do without having to stray offsite – families can unwind on lazy days around the swimming pool, or if you’re feeling more energetic, play mini-golf, challenge the kids to table tennis and pétanque or supervise your toddlers in the play area. You can fire up the barbecue or come the weekend, forgo cooking altogether for eating alfresco in the flower-filled terrace restaurant – Sunday roasts are a big hit. In high season, your night-time entertainment is taken care of too, as the campsite owners organise regular concerts featuring bands and solo tribute acts.

Local attractions

There’s plenty to see hereabouts. If you fancy a day exploring historic Dordogne towns, try Brantôme en Périgord (10 minutes) for its centuries-old abbey and riverside Jardins Tranquilles, walk around the medieval walls at Bourdeilles (20 minutes) or stroll the fortifications at hilltop Villebois-Lavelette (20 minutes). The lively towns of Périgueux (40 minutes) and Angoulême (45 minutes) are always a pleasure to visit for their historic landmarks and gourmet bistros. Prefer to spend your time getting active out of doors? Hike the local woodlands, go canoeing on the Dronne river (15 minutes) and drive to the lake at Grand Étang de Saint-Estèphe (half an hour) where you can swim from a well-equipped, supervised beach and take the kids pedal boating too. Chances are most youngsters will also enjoy seeing the owls and wolves at Le Parc Sauvage (15 minutes) as well. Mixing in some culture to your camping break, you can tour prehistoric cave paintings in Villars caves (25 minutes), and there are many châteaux to see in the region, including Château de Bourdeilles (20 minutes), open for meanders around its formal gardens and lavish rooms.
