Pitch up in Le Puy-en-Velay for a green and peaceful spot at the foot of the iron Notre-Dame de France statue, right in the middle of a splendid UNESCO-listed French city famed for its lentils, its cathedral and its lace-making heritage. A most excellent start point for sightseeing, it’s also near the beginning of the Via Podiensis – the oldest French route on the St. James Way pilgrimage route – and close to the banks of the Loire river. Camping du Puy-en-Velay is set across one-and-a-half grassy hectares right in the middle of Le-Puy-en-Velay, among a wild and natural setting; several waymarked walking trails cross the entrance and the river flows peacefully by 200 metres away, making for scenic hiking and fruitful fishing options a short walk away. When you’re back from gawping at all the gorgeous medieval architecture around the place, park yourself by your pitch… and relax. Barbecues are allowed here, so light the coals, get the grill going and settle back to sizzle – if you’re in town on Wednesdays or Saturdays, then the morning farmers’ market is a cracking spot to pick up local produce to scoff pitchside; if not, then plenty of shops and supermarkets are around too.

Disliked: Cabines de Douches bien trop petite, quasiment rien pour poser ou suspendre ses affaires. La lumière s’éteint dans le local douches et douche prise dans le noir ! WIFI ne reste actif qu’à 25 m de l’accueil, au delà plus aucun signal.......

Local attractions

Sports-based activity aplenty awaits nearby – ask Catherine and Samuel where you can head for tennis, or for the best spots for clambering up local climbing routes or canyoning, rafting, canoeing and fishing along the Loire. Several local hiking routes pass the entrance of the site, or you can tour the area on horseback from the saddle of your bike. If you’re of a daring disposition, you may well rather fancy the idea of paragliding or taking off in a light aircraft flight from Chaspuzac, or floating serenely above in a hot air balloon. For something to get the kids all giddy, ferry them to La Vague indoor pool complex, a short pootle away: there's a pool that’s kitted out with a curly-whirly toboggan slide for the kids while you hang out feeling pampered around the hammam and the sauna. For when everyone’s all watered out, a grassy picnic area is outside, so be sure to pack up a basket of local tidbits, and maybe even follow it up with an après-scoff snooze on the terrace.
