  • Cosy family site on a farm close to Saint-Germain-l’Herm
  • On the edge of the Livradois forest for bike and walking trails
  • Pizza, fresh bread and sociable dinners cooked by professional baker
Tread quietly and keep your eyes wide open when you go out for a walk in the area around Camping Le Sauzet, as you never quite know when you might encounter one of the locals... That’s the local wildlife, of course – owners René and Annemarie say that you’re more likely to come across a wild bird or deer than a person on the paths around the site. This is the kind of place where you can really have some peace and quiet, while still being within easy reach of civilisation: it’s an easy five-minute drive (or half-hour walk) to the village of Saint-Germain-l’Herm. All this serene scenery is within the grounds of a 19th-century farm, bordering the huge Livradois forest and its many kilometres of walking and bike paths. You’re in safe hands with the cuisine here, as one of the hosts is an ex-professional baker: René now channels his skills into guest dinners at the farm three times a week (booking required). At other times, order pizzas for takeaway and fresh bread is available in the mornings. In summer René will also often take the kids off your hands for a couple of hours to help them bake rolls for your lunch: what a fab little touch... While the waft of fresh bread lingers in the air, there’s much you can be doing around the site. Sun yourself on the loungers in the gardens, take a dip in the pool or have a game of table football, billiards or pétanque. Kids (when not baking your lunch) can spend time at the playground, bouncing on the trampoline or getting stuck into the contents of the toy box.

Local attractions

You can’t miss the Livradois forest, a huge wooded area for exploration by foot or bike. Three walking trails start from the farm with a further six from the village (three kilometres away) through countryside and into the southern part of the forest. The site owners particularly recommend the walk to a nearby waterfall – with the further attraction of passing by raspberry and blackberry bushes for a spot of foraging in high season. There are also a couple of cycle trails that you can join at the site – they’re best tackled on a mountain bike because of the hilly and rugged terrain (there are a couple of bikes for rent at the farm if you need them). For a gentler way to see the landscape, it’s just over an hour’s drive to Langeac and the tourist train through the Gorges d’Allier. Alternatively, take the family off to the Amethyst House in Vernet-la-Varenne (a 15-minute drive) to learn a bit more about the production of these gorgeous purple gems.
