  • Family-friendly camping on the shore of Villefranche-de-Panat lake
  • An hour's drive from hikes and canoe trips in Gorges du Tarn
  • Direct access to lake beach for fishing, swimming and watersports
What a lush lakeside location… a stay at Le Saint Etienne is a viewsome vacation right on the banks of Villefranche-de-Panat lake. Direct access to the shoreline means plenty of scope for leisurely days of fishing, swimming and sunbathing on the sandy beach or hiring watersports kit to potter about on the lake’s clear waters. Wander away from the water’s edge a little and you can also play games of pétanque or volleyball, or find a shady spot in which to relax while les enfants busy themselves at the playground or games room, or trot around on organised pony rides. A shop and snack bar provide feeds, drinks and ice creams, and the bar is the place for evenings of live music and other ents in the summer months. Fresh bread and pastries can be ordered for high-season breakfasts. Further edible goodies can be acquired in Villefranche-de-Panat village, a 20-minute stroll away and home to bakeries, restaurants, a butcher, a supermarket and a fine fromagerie. Dedicated cheese fiends will no doubt wish to make a trip to Roquefort-sur-Soulzon, 45 minutes’ drive away; other guests may prefer days spent canoeing through the Gorges du Tarn, hiking around Millau or visiting the area’s many castles (there’s a tick-sheet of 18 within an hour or so’s drive for true château champions).

Local attractions

Make the 50-minute journey to Millau for hikes, boat trips and quad bike trips that take in views of the world’s tallest bridge (the Millau Viaduct, a whopping 343 metres from top to bottom), visit the rock formations at Montpellier-le-Vieux and explore local villages including fortified La Couvertoirade and pretty Sainte-Eulalie-de-Cernon. More amazing rock formations are around an hour’s drive away in the Gorges du Tarn – a 53-kilometre canyon formed around the Tarn river and a fab place for days spend canoeing, rafting, canyoning or climbing. A series of circular trails take in some tiptop views for hikers, mountain bikers and drivers. If castles are your thing, you’re in the right place – with a drive of less than an hour you can visit hilltop Château de Sévérac, peruse the rural art museum at Château de Saint-Izaire or wander around Toulouse-Lautrec’s old home of Château du Bosc. Not enough? There are 15 more châteaux along the region's Route des Seigneurs.
