  • Quiet site near the banks of the Gironde estuary
  • Near vineyards, beaches and Cognac producers
  • Local seafood specialties in the site bar-restaurant
Might you know what the vastest estuary in western Europe is? You will if you have a stay at Camping Port Maubert, for it's on the estuary of Gironde, an enormous expanse of water stretching for over 75 kilometres where the Dordogne and Gironde rivers meet. Fishing and boating are – but of course – a breeze to get along to from here, accessible from the local town of Port Maubert and further along the estuary. Also easily around are wildlife watching around the marshlands, vino spotting around the Médoc vineyards, cycling the marsh and estuary paths, and surfing and swimming off the local Médoc peninsula beaches. Bordeaux and La Rochelle are each just over an hour's drive away for city days and urban sightseeing. You'll want to sample seafood galore around here too: Port Maubert is known for its sturgeon (and sturgeon caviar), its lamprey and its fried eels, and local specialities including fresh seafood are dished up in the site restaurant. You could also have a snack from the bar or a meal from the takeaway, or use the communal barbecue area to fry up your own fish brought back from town. Leisure facilities include a pool, a pétanque area, a multisports court and a roomy playground. The team runs regular events in high season too, such as karaoke nights, evening entertainment and kids' workshops and crafts.

Local attractions

A sailing school is a kilometre away in Port Maubert and windsurfing, surfing and swimming are all available on Atlantic Ocean waters a short drive from the site. Go boating around this stretch of the Gironde estuary, wander around its marshes and meadows, or go fishing from the Port Maubert reservoir surrounding the site or just along the estuary at the village of Saint Fort sur Gironde. On land, trek the local scenic stretch of the GR 360 hiking trail, covering 118 kilometres of the Charente-Maritime department from Saint-Romain-de-Benet to Saint-Georges-des-Agouts. Wildlife watching is all around too, either just on a gentle amble around the nearby marshes and meadows, or by driving 20 kilometres to the Pôle-Nature de Vitrezay nature reserve, also on the edge of the estuary. Historyheads might fancy a stroll around the Château de Beaulon gardens and distillery five kilometres away, built in the late 15th century as a residence for the Bishops of Bordeaux, and these days a historic monument open to the public. Also try the Caves of Matata within 15 kilometres, which include a museum showing the lives of those who lived in the caves from prehistoric times until the 19th century. Other options are the beaches, boat trips and watersports of Royan, 60 kilometres away, investigating the vineyards around Bordeaux (70 kilometres), and taking off for long days of cycling, around the Gironde region's 500+ kilometres of bike paths.
