  • Highly peaceful and historic site in the grounds of a former bathhouse
  • A short drive from the sea and 45 minutes from Coimbra
  • Mosaic workshops
If a peaceful and happy vibe on a site run by arty sorts is what you seek for your next hol, then Termas da Azenha is the arty place for you. And then there are the local mineral water pools, the friendly hosts, mosaic workshops and open countryside as far as the eye can see… all 45 minutes from Coimbra. Plenty of pretty spots are around this former bathhouse site’s immediate locale for sunset ambles or watching the storks feeding around the surrounding rice fields, and the seaside city of Figueira da Foz is an easy half an hour’s drive away. Back at base, artworks and home-made mosaics are all around the site: learn to craft your own at one of the regular workshops. The place has been set up as a simple and basic campsite for those who want to enjoy the peace. The well water still runs through the old bathhouse and there's a bath available there where you can have a soak in this healthy water. For more dips, there's a small pool on site with some mosaic terraces around it, a lake two kilometres away, and several lovely beaches within a half-hour drive.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: This very nice campsite is so beautiful! The owner decorated everything with handmade mosaics, it looks amazing. Shower and toilet were clean. The campsite is located at a little creek where you can watch the sunset. In the morning we found a bag with tomatoes from the garden for us. I recommend this campsite!

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Green grass and shade.

Disliked: Mosquitoes from the rice paddy. Shower was full of spiderwebs

From the manager: Hello Zelda, sorry I missed you, but I trust my son received you well. Also sorry about the mosquitoes, al though there's little we can do about them. We can do something about the spiders, but because they love their little snack (mosquitos), they're back when you cleaned and then turn your back. :) Have a nice holiday!

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: The one saving grace about this place is that we managed to receive an important package here.

Disliked: A WARNING TO ALL OTHER POTENTIAL VISITORS - THIS IS NOT AS ADVERTISED OR IN THE PHOTOS. We have been travelling for 6 months now, and this was the most disappointing stay so far. The thermal pools that were mentioned 6 times on the listing, we were told were unavailable to us as some people had booked it privately. I told the receptionist that this was very disappointing as this was the reason we had booked this place and was met with a shrug... We paid for access to these pools too, if they weren't available then the listing should be updated, or as we booked over a week in advance an email notifying us this was the case should have been sent so that we could decide on the matter. They were just happy to take our money and not care about us. If only the other facilities had made up for this disappointment, I would have given a better rating, but unfortunately the other baths mentioned were very poor. Only one was available, and as there was no bath plug the receptionist used a dish washing sponge to try and block the water from leaving, it didn't fill up the bath at all and the hot water ran turned to cold after 10 minutes so we gave up on this. Another disappointment. Finally to top if off the shower room is in a horrible state, with mosquitos and spider webs everywhere, public showers in gas stations are kept in better conditions. The hot water in the morning also ran out whilst i was showering, and considering there was only one other couple staying, meant that there was only a maximum of 3 people who could have used the hot water before me. Another disappointment for a "thermal spa".

From the manager: Well, that is quite a story for a stay of one night! Let me try to explain, dear readers, because apparently this is meant as a warning to stay away! Let's start with the most important thing: you didn't have a good experience. I'm sorry. We like your stay here to be a nice one, but sometimes is doesn't work. After 23 years I know, this is not for everybody, and it's OR you love it, OR you hate it. It seems that you belong to the last group, and that's a pity. On the other hand, it was one day of your life, so I truly hope that if you have a good experience somewhere, you take the trouble of submitting an even bigger story. If you want to stay in the middle of nature without seeing any insects, I wish you good luck. They are here anyway, and they'll crawl back in after the shower is cleaned, because this is a point that I'm a bit offended by - it might be basic and simple, but it is clean. I know how important that is. I have asked for a change in the description with Pitchup. There is no pool on the site, but there are several free pools, lovely lakes and various beaches at a distance of mimimum 1, maximum 17 km. For the rest, it's cheap. I don't think 15 euros a night for 2 people, a truck and electricity is overpriced.

This site is not for everyone. We forfeited our 3 nights payment

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: The concept behind the campsite and the quirky communal area

Disliked: Poor communication, no light in shower, camping pitch not prepared for camping. No food/drink provision. Traffic noise. We felt we were an inconvenience. We did not complain but chose not to stay. We voted with our feet and left after 2 hours.

From the manager: You are completely right, this is not for everyone. After 23 years I know that it's a OR/OR place. Or you love it, or you hate it - there's not so much in between. But allow me to elaborate on your negative points: I have warned you about the light in the shower, because I always do. The terrain is partially mowed in spring, to allow the flowers to bloom and the bees to look for food. Only in summer we mow all of the grass because nothing blooms anymore, and high grass is a fire-hazard. Sorry that I wasn't welcoming enough - I truly don't want to give you the feeling that you are an inconvenience. Maybe I'd better have told you all the above, have a little chat. I failed to do that. And then, as the last thing: there's no bar, and no pool on this campsite. It's a simple, basic site, for peace- & nature lovers. If you want to have your money back, please contact me. In the end you did not stay, so you don't have to pay. Have a nice holiday

Local attractions

Head over to Figueira da Foz for sandside and watery days around the fishermen’s beach of Costa de Lavos, bouldery Buarcos beach and the surf spot of Gala, all within half an hour's drive. A freshwater lake for swimming is in Ereira, 20 minutes’ drive away, and canoeing is on the Mondego river within a short drive. If you’re a clambering sort, then head to the coastal climbing spot of Serra da Boa Viagem within 40 minutes’ drive. History types will find plenty to do around too: a castle is in Montemor-o-Velho, and there are plenty of sights to see in the colourful historic university city of Coimbra – also a tiptop place to shop for souvenirs. (Speaking of which, more can be procured at the Sunday morning market stalls over in Louriçal.)
