  • Coastal location with spectacular sea and mountain views
  • Two tennis courts, pools, pétanque court and indoor futsal pitch
  • A kilometre from Calella and under an hour from Barcelona and Girona
A mighty big rock and a mighty fine beach… these factors would make Roca Grossa in the Barcelona province a mighty sensible Catalonia seaside pick just by themselves. But add in its setting a kilometre from the famed Costa del Maresme destination of Calella, and a friendly, fun-filled vibe that's had the site lauded as 'a fantastic place to take kids', and, well, you should inform those back home that you may be here some time. The setting is spectacular here, on the Catalonian coast between Sant Pol de Mar and Pineda de Mar, above a sandy beach, and over seven hectares of lush land between these clear waters and the mountains. It's handy to get to too as it's on the N-11, and a nifty base for other Catalonian coast holiday spots like Malgrat del Mar and Blanes. City days at Barcelona and Girona are under an hour's drive away. Barbecues (gas, electric and coal) are allowed on site: sort your grocery and vino shopping at the well-stocked minimarket or just down the road in Calella, a destination so dedicated to shopping that it has over 500 outlets along a mammoth two-kilometre length. The pools (one for grownups, one for kids) are well sized and surrounded by greenery with roomy sunbathing space alongside. Also among the leisurely options on offer are two tennis courts, a pétanque court, two ping pong tables and an indoor futsal (five-a-side) pitch, so you can show off your skilled sporty moves. Entertainment and activities in July and August are included in the accommodation rate.

Local attractions

This is a smashing part of Spanish coast, dotted with secluded coves and sandy beaches as well as famed seaside towns such as Malgrat, Tossa and Pineda del Mar. Excellent restaurants and bars are in all, but if you're too comfy to travel far, Sant Pol del Mar and Calella are both within a kilometre. Just past Malgrat del Mar along the coast is Blanes, the fab old town with more golden sands, a famed summer fireworks display and the Mar i Murtra botanical gardens, with plants from around the world set against a backdrop of sea views. From Blanes, it's a short drive to Lloret del Mar, where you can whizz down the waterslides and chutes of Water World, or to Palafolls to make pals with marine mammals and other critters at the dolphin park and zoo of Marineland Catalunya. (For a quieter vibe, climb to the clifftop gardens of Santa Clotilde.)
