Shore for sure – West Shores RV Park and Storage is on the banks of the Salton Sea lake in the Anza Borrego Desert. As well as being fably placed for birdwatching around Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, this place has easy access to heaps of recreation options: fishing, swimming, horse riding, off-road touring and hiking are all nearby, as are golfing games at the 100-plus courses around Palm Springs and Palm Desert. Should you be looking for something swish to do, pootle over to Palm Springs, just over an hour away: its main shopping area along Palm Canyon Drive has lots of vintage and interior design shops to wander around and a good collection of ritzy restaurants and bars for the sampling of fine Californian wines and gastronomy too. Back at base, the park plays host to an annual paragliding event in February, and has highway access to Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area for off-road riders, making it handy for the Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari. For parkside eats and tipples, West Shores has a café and bar in an excellent spot for watching the sun sink over Salton Sea. The roomy accommodation areas all have full hookups and are surrounded by mature landscaping, and guests have use of amenities like restrooms with showers, a laundry room and a wifi service, as well as propane sales.

Local attractions

Set forth for the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, at the southern end of the lake, to spy migratory birds such as the yellow-footed gull, native in the US only to Salton Sea lake. For hunting, fishing and swimming, head to the Salton Sea State Recreation Area on the northeastern edge of the lake; or go off road to and tour the tracks around Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area. An easy hour’s drive away, get caught up among the swanky boutiques and swish restaurants around California’s mineral hot-spring capital, Palm Springs. The city's spas are popular for full-on pampering days, and the 100-plus courses around both Palm and Desert Springs bring plenty of golfers too. While in town, keep peepers peeled for lots of fine examples of midcentury-modern architecture, and plan some time to drift along the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway – the world's largest rotating tram car – to the wilderness of Mt. San Jacinto State Park. Staying around this part of the Californian countryside, trek along to Coachella Valley, a land of sand, rock and rattlesnakes. It’s famed for its world-class hiking trails like the challenging 22-mile Cactus to Clouds trek; as it’s one of the world's most scorching places, guided hikes are highly recommended (even for the experienced walker).
