  • Peaceful Yorkshire Dales site with views of Pen-y-Ghent
  • A 15-minute drive from Settle; steam train rides pass the site
  • Dog-friendly site within walking distance of three country pubs
Well, isn’t this a really rather fine rural setting – on the banks of the River Ribble and within easy rambling distance of restorative pints at one of Horton-in-Ribblesdale’s three country pubs: how fab... Cragg Hill Farm is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the views from this peaceful place won’t let you forget that for even a sec. Gaze in one direction and you'll hopefully see Pen-y-Ghent towering over the site; turn the other way and you might just catch a glimpse of the Settle-Carlisle Railway trains wending their way through the scenic surrounds. Settle is a 15-minute drive to the south; as well as being the launch point for train rides, it’s also a good place to source supermarket supplies (or have a swim or a game of golf if you’re shunning such mundanities as shopping). For other days out, it’s recommended you look not much further than roaming around the Yorkshire Dales – although you could also consider hitting the coast at Morecambe, an hour’s drive away, if you’re yearning for a bit of sea air. Back at the farm, life is pretty laidback, with no noisome ents to interfere with the peace, just toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area to keep you and your kit clean.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nice site, check in was easy, tracks and fields well maintained. It is a basic site but that’s all we needed. It has good showers, plenty of fresh water points and the toilets are ok and there is enough for each field.

Disliked: Only bad point is the track has very little passing points so got stuck every time we came or left but it is what it is

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Location for walks. Scenic site with nice views. Toilets and bins regularly tended to.

Disliked: Fields flooded (had been a lot of rain), single track lane to get onto site is awkward when another car is coming the opposite way as it’s a long track with not many pulling in areas so one needs to reverse some distance to allow the other to pass.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The location of the campsite, close to plenty of walks and pen-y-ghent. Fair price for pitch in the area.

Disliked: Single track road in and out of the campsite not many passing places. No clear signs for reception/check in, only one sign as you enter the campsite.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Big field with lots of space to pitch up like the fact you can choose were you pitch.

Disliked: No hot water in toilet blocks on field and lights do not work in the toilets. Long drive down single track road had to reverse multiple times as no room to pass.

Disliked: Very few toilets and no lights around them. The lights in the toilets also didn't work, but otherwise a perfect stay!

Local attractions

This is a mighty fine part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to be based in, as it’s within easy reach of several fab sights. Malham Cove and Malham Tarn, half an hour away by car, combine to make an excellent day’s walk; the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (25 minutes’ drive) is another that’s worth walking. If it’s not walking weather, get underground at White Scar Cave (20 minutes) or Ingleborough Cave (35 minutes). Not active enough? Those for whom Pen-y-Ghent is not so much scenery as a challenge can set out from the site for the climb to the 694-metre peak. Follow up by scaling slightly taller Ingleborough (also accessible on foot from the farm) and taller-still Whernside (15 minutes’ drive) to tick Yorkshire’s Three Peaks Challenge off your bucket list. You may like a little sit down after all that (or instead…) and a fine place for that is in a seat on the Settle to Carlisle Railway, which you can board at the nearest station a mile away in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Even if you’re not up for the ride, you may like to take in the view of the Ribblehead Viaduct (15 minutes), famed for many as the route taken by the Hogwarts Express.
