  • Adults-only glamping on the edge of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park
  • Dinefwr 10 minutes’ drive; National Botanic Garden of Wales 20 minutes
  • Far-reaching mountain views; home-grown vegetables; communal fridge
Leave the kids at home with their grandparents, pack your comfiest walking boots and make a well-deserved break for Welsh Hilltop Escape, an adults-only glamping site on the edge of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons), in Carmarthenshire, south-west Wales. The location is blissfully peaceful, with ancient trees dotting fields full of vibrantly coloured wildflowers, and splendid views across the valleys and all the way to the mountains. A pond attracts birds and frogs, who provide a relaxing natural soundtrack to your stay here. You can choose to keep things romantic and do very little, except cosy up in your chosen accommodation, watch the spectacular sunsets and make plans for the future around the firepit; or crank up the activity dial with epic walks in the Brecon Beacons, paddleboarding on the River Towy or hitting the links (there are three golf courses within a 20-minute drive). The owners grow their own vegetables and will gladly sell you a box of their finest produce to accompany whatever you’re grilling on the barbecue (which is provided, as is a communal fridge). For anything else you might need, the market town of Llandeilo (five minutes’ drive) has independent grocery stores and supermarkets, plus a decent selection of dining options. If you want to sample some locally brewed beers, the nearest pub is a 15-minute walk away. In addition to a composting toilet (lit up by fairy lights at night) and showers, the site has a washing-up area, plus recycling and charging facilities.

Local attractions

Edged to the south by the River Towy, National Trust - Dinefwr (10 minutes’ drive) includes the ruins of a hilltop 12th-century fortress; elegant Newton House, first built in the 1660s, then reworked in the Victorian era with neo-Gothic elements; and a vast area of parkland that’s home to a herd of deer. The National Botanic Garden of Wales (20 minutes) is known for its Great Glasshouse, which displays plants from Australia, California and other far-flung corners of the world. There are more exotic offerings in the Tropical House, while the Japanese Garden has peaceful ponds and cherry trees. Within Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (55 minutes) is home to a network of caverns and underground passages. One of the highlights is the Cathedral Cave, a remarkable (and atmospherically illuminated) chamber with stalactites and waterfalls.
