  • Well-served family site on the Ionian coast in Metaponto
  • Near the UNESCO-listed 'Subterranean City' of ancient Matera
  • Private beach, piano bar and cabaret shows in the amphitheatre
A piano bar in a pine forest? How woodily wondrous. As are many other fab features of lush and family-friendly Camping Park Riva dei Greci, tucked under the arch of Italy's boot on the Ionian coast. Just to start you off for the first few days, this peaceful resort has its own private beach, reachable via a 500-metre boulevard by foot, bike or – you're on holiday, after all – shuttle service. Golden sands await after your teeny beachwards journey, along with sailing boats, canoes and – you're on holiday, after all – a beach bar. Around the area, another kilometre of beach is at Metoponto, a few minutes' drive away, and the park's Matera province and Bernalda comune setting is within easy day trip distance of the fab UNESCO-listed site of the ancient city of Matera. Falcon, eagle, deer and otter spotting is at Pollino National Park, Italy's biggest, about 45 minutes' drive away. But you may be agog to hear about this woodland piano bar – and the rest... It's among the many fine facilities for all ages and tastes at Camping Park Riva dei Greci's four-hectare expanse of pine forest: you'll likely find the archery and orienteering area right on target for fun family days; there's a bowling alley for your rolling amusement, and balls of other sizes can be swatted about at the tennis court, table football and ping pong tables. And. Riva dei Greci has its own amphitheatre too, hosting evening entertainment like cabaret shows and live music… and a disco for dancing types hankering to show off their moves after a day at the beach. And then there's the restaurant… dishing up regional foodie options such as seafood spaghetti and other fresh pasta, grilled red snapper, local pine nuts, cheese, sausage and olives – to be washed down with fine wines and real ales mostly from Basilicata. (And before, after or both? Work your way through what the del Greci team enticingly describe as 'a list of magnificent cocktails'.) The resort also has a mini market, as finely filled with fresh regional and other produce as you'd expect, along with bike hire, a TV room, a pétanque court and free wifi. As everything's been most carefully considered here, entertainment for offspring of all sizes is sorted as well, at the summer clubs for kids and teens.

Local attractions

If you do manage to get off site or unpeel yourself from the sands of the private beach, one of your first day trips should be to the spectacular troglodyte settlement of Matera, about 45 minutes' drive away. The ancient hamlet here is thought to have been one of the first human settlements in Italy, and Metera overall is known as la Città Sotterranea or the Subterranean City, because of its habitations dug into the rock. Its old centre of Sassi, along with the Park of the Rupestrian Churches, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also within day trip distance is Pollino National Park, the biggest in Italy. A popular option here is the walk starting at Fosso Jannace along the edge of a stream crossed several times by old wooden bridges, and through forests of spruce, beech and maple. Continue walking for a couple of hours and you'll reach glades and mountain springs, and then head down the slopes towards the Great Gate of the Pollino, across the Garden of the Gods and up to the Serra di Crispo ridge to look out over the Ionian coast and Basilicata. The Calanchi of Montalbano Jonico Regional Reserve and the archaeological sites of Metapontino are also within easy reach.
