  • Adults-only back-to-basics site 10 minutes' drive from Street
  • Half an hour's drive from the coast and 40 minutes from Cheddar Gorge
  • Great views over the Mendips and Quantock Hills
Sometimes the simple life is the best life – fresh air, great views and a quiet spot to cook your bangers before laying your head down for the night. With this in mind the folks at Countryside Caravan Park haven’t felt the need to develop their offering too far, preferring the rural vibe that comes with a back-to-basics site. And you can understand their reasoning – why bother with unnecessary distractions when you’ve got all these glorious views to look out over? Pick your spot, crack open a beer and watch the ever-changing sky over the Mendips, or look west ready to catch the sunset over the Quantock Hills. If you’d rather a beer was poured for you, it’s a 20-minute stroll to one of the two pubs in Ashcott. Speaking of removing distractions, kids and dogs aren’t invited to join the party, leaving the grownups free to light up a barbie, have a chat and generally just enjoy having the place to themselves. Basic amenities are provided in form of a toilet block with shower facilities but otherwise you’re very much left to your own devices. Yup, that simple life looks pretty good.

Local attractions

When it comes to leaving your country retreat, there are plenty of nearby attractions to keep you busy. Follow up all the fresh air with a bit of sea breeze at the coast, half an hour’s drive away. The sandy stretch of beach at Burnham-on-Sea is the closest, with the resort of Weston-Super-Mare around 40 minutes away. Also about 40 minutes away is the dramatic limestone landscape of Cheddar Gorge, Britain’s largest gorge with cliffs rising to 450 feet. Take a walk along the top of the cliffs, climb the 274 steps of the Lookout Tower for amazing views and visit some of the caves to see what lies underground. Brave souls can sign up for caving and climbing trips here too. For more splendid views without so much climbing, head to Glastonbury Tor, 15 minutes away. You can also learn about why this is such a spiritual place and follow a nature trail to see if you can spot the native Large Blue butterfly. Nearby at Glastonbury Abbey you can visit the legendary burial place of King Arthur before taking a walk round the 36 acres of parkland. If you’ve got an interest in engines and the like, head to the Haynes International Motor Museum, 25 minutes away, to see the UK’s largest collection of cars and bikes – over 400 of them, some dating back to the late 19th century. Nearby is Europe’s largest naval aviation collection, at Fleet Air Arm Museum. Among the attractions here is the chance to walk through the inside of one of the Concorde planes.
