  • Family-friendly safari tents on a busy site on the Rhederlaag
  • Within a half-hour drive of Arnhem, Apeldoorn and Burgers' Zoo
  • Lake beach for swimming, fishing and watersports, plus outdoor pool
If you’re firmly of the belief that hols should be fully faff-free, it’s likely you’ll be rather fond of family-friendly Vodatent at Recreatiepark Rhederlaagse Meren, 20 minutes’ walk from the little town of Lathum and a 20-minute drive from Arnhem. The folk at this Gelderland glamping site have set up their safari tents with stacks of useful stuff, which means that once you’ve dumped bags and made the beds you’re free to get the fun times started. For many guests that means making a beeline for the beach, a sandy stretch on the banks of the Rhederlaag, with direct access to the water for swims, fishing and watersports. For others, it’s off for more contained splashing in the outdoor pool and paddling pool, or a run about on the tennis court or panna field, or to scramble over the bits and bobs at the playground. And if you happen to be here in high season, you may also quite quickly lose kids to the programme of activities laid on for their benefit. If it’s been a long journey, it may well be eats and drinks that form the most urgent need – source those at the site’s food shop, restaurant and cafeteria, or settle in for a well-earned beer at the traditional-style ‘brown pub’. If you’re going down the self-catering route you’ll be chuffed to see that each safari tent has a well-equipped kitchen unit, with a hob and fridge. It’s on wheels, so you can trundle it out into the open air if you fancy combining cheffing and sunbathing.

Local attractions

Venturing beyond the park, it’s a fine idea to bring bikes along to pedal over to Middachten Castle (20 minutes away by bike) or take to the trails of the Veluwezoom National Park (15 minutes). The riverside ride to Arnhem (40 minutes) is a good one too – once there, meander around the modern art museum, open-air museum and wine museum (and perhaps reward your efforts with a small glass of something). There are more trails for biking and hiking among the heaths, woods and sand dunes of Hoge Veluwe National Park (20 minutes’ drive), and another pretty castle to peruse in the form of 13th-century Doornenburg Castle (25 minutes). Got kids who can’t get enough of animal antics? The excellent Burgers' Zoo is about a 15-minute drive away, and Apenheul primate park about half an hour away for some monkey mayhem. If you’ve got tiddlers under the age of eight or so, take them over to Koningin Julianatoren amusement park (35 minutes) for rides and shows aimed especially at younger folk.
