  • Stay on a private nature reserve in the Karoo
  • Adventurers’ paradise: 4x4, hiking, biking and climbing
  • Top spot for stargazing
When you say you want to go off-grid for your hols, do you really, really mean it? If you answered yes, then Gecko Rock Private Nature Reserve, 45 minutes’ drive from the small town of Touws River in the Western Cape, may be the site for you. With no electricity and no phone signal, Gecko Rock is top for anyone who wants to get away from the always-on expectations of modern life, and you can relax far from the stresses of your daily grind. In the semidesert of Karoo, it’s also a prime spot for exploring this part of the Western Cape: take the guided Gecko Rock Seattle 4x4 trail through the region (keeping your eyes peeled for leopards, springbok, zebra and honey badgers), follow one of the hiking routes, or clamber into the saddle to mountain bike along 40 kilometres of trails. Rest your weary limbs back on site with a high-season dip in the splash pool, then fire up the braai (communal if you’re feeling social, private if not) and pile it high with supplies from the shops in Touws River before chowing down with your gaze turned to the skies – you don’t want to miss out on the stargazing here.

Local attractions

If you’ve gotten all the rugged exploration out of your system, there’s still plenty to do near Gecko Rock. It’s a must-visit destination for climbers, with tons of routes along the crags to get your gear into – if abseiling is more your thing, the team on site will be happy to oblige. There are also training courses for off-roading newbies if doing one of the 4x4 trails or dirt biking still feel a little out of reach. The Gecko Rock squad hosts training along the reserve’s routes or through mountain passes, so you’ll be all set the next time you visit. For something a little less heart-in-your-throat, sign up for a guided tour of the flowers and succulents of the Karoo, or follow one of the marked hiking trails to take it all in at your own pace – don’t forget your camera, as there are oodles of chances for colourful macro shots. Lucky enough to be using Gecko Rock as a temporary stop on your onward journey? The bushman paintings, swimming reservoir, kayaking and horse trails of Anysberg Nature Reserve are less than an hour’s drive away, and Cape Town is within three hours of the site.
