  • Family-run dairy farm and fishery with views over The Roaches
  • Short drive to Alton Towers, Peak Wildlife Park and Tittesworth Water
  • On-site farm shop and farm animals; 10 minutes' walk to two local pubs
Set on the southern edge of the Peak District National Park, Brooklyn Grange Farm is a back-to-basics site on a family-run dairy farm surrounded by gorgeous Staffordshire countryside. The scenery here is varied indeed, with views over quiet fishing pools, grassy meadows and the spectacular rocky ridge known as The Roaches. You'll also be well placed to sample local produce at this small-scale site – you can head to the farm shop and light up a barbecue (as long as it's kept off the grass). If you don't have your own, there are firepits for hire from the farm shop and kindling and logs for sale. There's also a village pub and carvery around 10 minutes' walk away on the edge of Thorncliffe (with another around 10 minutes' walk way in Blackshaw Moor). For more flavours, try Leek (five minutes' drive), a local market town with a good range of restaurants, cafés and food shops. After a trip to town it's back to the countryside, where you might like to try a spot of catch-and-return fishing at one of the site's well-stocked ponds (for an extra fee; you must have an Environment Agency licence; no fishing available during the spawning season, which is generally in late May and/or early June). You could also take yourself off for a hike in the national park (a mile away), where there are many miles of well-mapped trails to explore. As for facilities, Brooklyn Grange Farm has functional and well-maintained toilets for guests. There is one shower available here (bookable for an extra charge at the farm shop), or you can take the option of travelling five minutes down the road to Brough Park Leisure Centre.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We can't think of anything to complain about. The pitch was the perfect location and exactly how it looked on photos. The farm shop had everything you would've needed as a young couple coming away for a few nights and the staff were excellent. For our first trip away in our tent we couldn't have wished for a better site. 10/10.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Location looked okay

Disliked: Turned up to. Very very muddy pitch too muddy to get on. Had to be pushed out my By fellow campers and we're unable to stay on site at all. Couldn't find anyone on site who ran / worked there. Had to find somewhere else to stay

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Friendly staff who ensured we felt welcome. The shop was well stocked. They went the extra mile for my clumsy requests.

Disliked: Shame there weren’t ground rules for the youngsters partying past 12am next to us

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review - apologies for the noisy group, as stated on the last review we limit the party numbers booking but they can still all meet on separate bookings - we do have ground rules and as already stated I am a phone call away to sort out if needs be, as a rule we have a well behaved, respectful campsite

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Polite lady on shop reception. Location/view.

Disliked: Noise, noise, noise. Bank holiday weekend so I guess it was busier than usual but in my opinion, just too many groups of people there just to get pi**ed up, play music till late and generally not give a sh*t about others on the site. Usually campsites operate a rule of keep noise to a minimum after a certain time but not here unfortunately. Toilets/facilities are bare bones basic too.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, comments noted - we do operate a quiet time with it being a family campsite, we state quiet time after 11pm, I'm sorry you experienced a noisy group, we have a limit on people booking in one group but it doesn't stop them making multiple bookings and meeting up, my phone is always on in case of any disturbance for me & my husband to come and sort & we would have done if notified - we do only state on our site info that we are a back to basics campsite which you have stated which also reflects on the prices given - our facilities are basic, but clean

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Spectacular views, nothing too much trouble for the hosts.

Disliked: Pitch up stated we had to buy logs and fire fuel on site, logs a little damp and hard to burn. Saw lots of people bringing their own logs with them

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Great views. Location. Farm shop. Fires allowed. Friendly hosts. Pub 10 mins down the road and walking distance to the Roaches. Clean well stocked toilets. Listen to the various wild fowl on the lakes.

Disliked: Water-logged ground and vehicle tracks. Congested parking due to poor weather. I appreciate the host cannot be held responsible for the weather but probably need to look into larger hard standing for vehicles due to the change in our weather patterns

From the manager: Thank you for your review & lovely photos - comments noted, unfortunately the month's rain in 24hrs that we had on the Wednesday previous just didn't give the field time to dry up before arrivals coming in on the Thursday, the previous weekend had been glorious everyone drove on & off with no issues - we are going to speak with pitch-up to see if we can have a separate allocation for the camper vans with having limited hard standing as on our booking sheet it unfortunately doesn't state what is arriving, be it tent or camper

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Good place for camping. Beautiful views, very easy access. Staff very friendly and helpful. Showers clean. We only stayed there for a weekend but it was nice.

Disliked: The toilets were constantly clogged and the flushers did not work in our field. One main thing we don't like is the fishing ban and that's one of the reasons we chose this place. After arrival, we received information that fishing was not allowed, but there was no information on the website. The most annoying thing was that someone else was fishing throughout our stay. If there is one rule for one person, it should apply to everyone.

From the manager: Thank you for your review - comments noted - no one came to me in the shop to say we had any issues with the toilets - with regards to the fishing on Pitch-up's Site info on the booking page in the description it clearly states that the pools will be closed when the fish are spawning which is usually late May to early June, it is not something that can be put an exact date on, my bailiff was the only one on the pools that I had asked to come to make sure that the rules were adhered to as only the week before we found that someone had illegally fished with a makeshift set up that would have harmed the fish - the fishing is run separately to the camping & I have strict rules

For further agreeable outings, head to the Churnet Valley Railway (15 minutes) or the Manifold Valley (10 minutes) and Thor's Cave (20 minutes). You could go hiking and climbing at The Roaches (10 minutes), visiting Lud's Church (10 minutes) as an add-on. And where else to set your sights on? Rudyard Lake (15 minutes) has a miniature railway too. A bit of luxury?
