Heading out to explore Hadrian’s Wall? Holmeshead is in an excellent location less than a mile from some of the wall’s top spots (Hare Hill, East Turret and Pike Hill Signal Tower), and with easy access via National Cycle Route 72 (known as ‘Hadrian’s Cycleway). And although Hadrian’s Wall is one of the big draws around here, it’s not the only thing you can explore when staying at Holmeshead. This quiet rural Cumbria location, on the banks of the Irthing river a mile from Lanercost, is also well set for heading north to Scotland, hitting the seaside at Solway Firth or walks in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The nearest town is Brampton, four miles away and a useful source of shops and places to eat; it’s also got a train station for services to Carlisle, Hexham and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Carlisle is about 25 minutes away if you’d rather drive (and it’s mostly an easy drive along the A69 – handy news for those navigating from the M6 as well). Your base for all of this? A cosy larch-clad shepherd’s hut for two in its own little grass paddock. The hut is fully insulated, so it stays at a comfortable temperature in all seasons. Inside, there’s a double bed, a woodburning stove, a TV and a galley kitchen with two-ring hob, oven and fridge. It’s also got a separate compartment housing a toilet and hot-water shower. Outside, a barbecue and brazier are on hand to sort out cooking and keeping warm on outdoor evenings; for more outdoor adventures, you can take a swim in a wild pool a couple of minutes’ walk away if you’re feeling hardy…
