Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The play area, my son loved this part of the camp and spent a majority of his time there. Staff were great and really accommodating. A lovely campsite.

Disliked: The long grass where we had to pitch our tent, we couldn't play our ball games and worried about how close it was to our bbq and stove even though they were on a stand(the stand is only a small one and wuite low)

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The kids disco and The park. Flat pitches. Able to set up as we liked.

Disliked: The walk to the toilet block was far. The grass had not been cut for quite sometime. There was more bugs that I've ever seen in my life and got bitten to shreds. Rowdy swearing neighbours arguing and punching the car. Although the warden came promptly it didn't make any difference to their behaviour until the early hours when they passed out with alcohol. The kids were scared. Relaxing weekend .. it was not! Phone signal... non existent.

Liked: Clean toilets and showers Great washing up area and laundry Great facilities

Disliked: Very long walk for campers to get to the toilets/shower block. This was a nightmare with kids needing the toilet, doing the washing up and taking bins etc

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great location, lots of space on the field to choose where you want your tent. Kids loved the play park! On-site pub with entertainment. Liverpool Leeds canal accessible from site for a walk.

Disliked: Reading the reviews prior to our stay I was wary about using the toilet/shower block. They could really do with an upgrade! No where near as good as the last few sites we have stayed at.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: It wasn’t that far from where we live and as it was kids first time camping it was ideal. It’s great for a last minute local get away and the grounds are well kept.

Disliked: The toilets could do with a revamp. They’re not bad but they could definitely be better. It would be ideal if the pub/restaurant on site served food later than 6pm too or maybe offered a bit of a limited menu take out service.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: What a lovely campsite this is, huge open field with water points, (would have earned the 5* if electric pitches where available.. fantastic play area for kids, onsite shop for essentials, and pub/ restaurant... shower/ toilet facilities in need of an upgrade, but didn't spoil our weekend , would definitely come again 👍

Disliked: Showers/ toilets need upgrading

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Large pitches, just arrive and pitch up anywhere. Great park area. Nice walk near canal. Great use of clubhouse with entertainment great for a rainy night to let the children burn energy off

Disliked: I feel the price matches the facilities. There could be improvements but this would then increase the price. I feel for what we paid our expectations were met.

Local attractions

You might want to get straight to the sands first from Shaw Hall, so pile the kids into the car and drive along to the seaside town of Southport, 10 to 15 minutes away, for its beach, botanic gardens and the famed (in some circles) lawnmower museum, the only such establishment in the country. You can also whirl around the fairground rides and attractions of Southport's amusement park, or have a promenade along the town's pier, where views stretch along the coast to Blackpool and north Wales. Elsewhere around the region, have afternoon tea on a scenic 90-minute canal boat tour along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, departing three miles from the site in Halsall, or drift around Marine Lake via pedalo or motorboat rides, seven miles away next to the coast in Southport. Four miles away is the Wetland and Wildlife Trust's Martin Mere reserve for birdwatching, wildlife spotting, boat rides and regular events including toddler days and nature ranger experiences. At nearby Ruff Wood, take the circular walk through 19 acres of mixed woodland filled with oak and silver birch trees. A little further afield are the salt marshes and sandflats of the Ribble Estuary National Nature Reserve, home to more than 250,000 ducks, geese, swans and wading birds; redshanks, skylarks, meadow pipits and linnets during summer; and 16 species of wintering birds.
