  • Winchester, Watercress Line and riding centre within 20 minutes' drive
  • Barbecues permitted; several family-run pubs nearby for eating out
Laidback and friendly are the key words at Barton View, in the handsome Hampshire countryside 10 minutes’ drive from Alresford. It’s a pick-your-own pitch setup here, and there’s plenty of space to choose from, all of it with fine rural views towards Winchester by day and dark skies for star-spotting by night. The owners have allocated a minimum of six metres between pitches here, so you can afford to spread out a little and make yourselves at home, perhaps bringing along a firepit to do a bit of cooking and keep warm while you enjoy the stunning sunsets. Dogs are welcome at Barton View (as long as they’re kept on a lead) and there’s plenty of space for kids to play or look out for wildlife – deer can often be seen in neighbouring fields, and there may be buzzards, kites and kestrels overhead. Alresford is a good hub for restaurants and cafés, and there are several family-run pubs close to the site too so you shouldn’t go short of places to eat or drink nearby. If you’d rather go down the self-catering route, bring along a barbecue and pick up supplies at the shops in town or the local farm shop. Days out nearby? There’s plenty to choose from here, including rides on the Watercress Line, historic strolls around Winchester, walks in the South Downs National Park and animal encounters at Marwell Zoo.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Highly recommend staying here, lovely luscious grassy site. Nic was amazing! he was so chilled, kind and welcoming. There was no rush to move off site next morning so had time to meditate and soak up the incredible site. Its a farm but no diary cows or sheep just beautiful horses that Nic loves and lovingly cares for. Surrounded by trees this tranquil spot lends itself to a complete get away with a peaceful, exciting walk to a local pub (40/60 min walk depending on ability) that serves incredible food, well worth the walk. Wildlife is off the scale with my bird app reading 6\7 birds. Also very clean cute converted horse box that provides toilet and sink. Would highly recommend staying and I will definitely be coming back, loved it!!!!!!!!! Thank you Nic :)

Liked: The ease of choosing and setting up our own pitch and the lovely welcome from the family. Watching the horses and sheep in the next field and the walk to the pub. Basic but very clean toilet facilities! Hopefully will be back next year
