  • Exclusive-use family glamping site in the South Downs National Park
  • Jane Austen’s House 10 minutes’ drive; Watercress Line 15 minutes
  • Bell tent by a fishing and swimming lake; views over a woodland SSSI
A peaceful setting among Hampshire flower meadows would be enough for many campers, but at Pookles Farm you get quite a lot more. Exclusive use of the site, a lake view, ducks to keep you company and a rather smart, well-furnished bell tent as your accommodation… and best of all, the glampsite is in the South Downs National Park, with easy access to hiking along the Hangers Way and cycling expeditions on the South Downs Way. In summer, organic edible flowers carpet the fields surrounding the camping meadow, which is bordered by the mature trees of Wick Wood and Worldham Hangers Site of Special Scientific Interest – you and any accompanying four-legged friends are very welcome to go exploring in the woodland. Facilities run to hot showers and the flat, well-kept grass pitch overlooks a small, spring-fed lake stocked with trout, where you can fish or cool off with a spot of wild swimming. The aforementioned friendly ducks may often accompany you on your jaunts around the farm, where you can also make friends with the pigs and free-range hens. If you need to restock supplies, it’s 15 minutes’ drive to supermarkets in Alton, and on those evenings when you fancy a pint, have a stroll down to the local pub (10 minutes’ walk) to sit out in the tree-shaded beer garden.

Local attractions

The hiking and cycling trails of the South Downs National Park are accessed from your pitch. You can also explore the chalk downs on horseback (10 minutes’ drive), and if you get a particularly clear night, climb Butser Hill (half an hour) – one of the highest points in Hampshire – to gaze at the Milky Way sparkling in the heavens above your head. After all that exercise and fresh air, a gentle afternoon’s potter may be called for, so sit back on the steam train as you chug through Hampshire countryside on the Watercress Line from Alton (15 minutes). Too tired to stir even that far? Smell the soothing scent of lavender as you tour the fields at the Lavender Barn (five minutes), where there’s a pretty café and a craft shop selling lavender-related bits and bobs. If you are of a literary bent, be sure to look in at Jane Austen’s House, left pretty much as it was when the author lived there for eight years before her death in 1817. The former mansion home to 18th-century naturalist Gilbert White (both 10 minutes) is also open for tours of its grand period rooms and gorgeous gardens.
