  • A 150-metre stroll from a beach for sea angling and fossil hunting
  • Fishing lake, play area and shop on site
Want to feel on top of the world? Travel down to Dorset and Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast of England and part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate. Golden Cap Holiday Park is the most cap-tastic place to take all this in, as it’s surrounded by peaceful Dorset countryside and part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. And, as should be expected in Dorset, it’s right next to the water – in the seaside village of Seatown and 150 metres from a shingle beach known for its sea angling and fossil hunting. Facilities at the park are excellent – there are two big modern shower/toilet blocks, a launderette and a well-stocked shop. Wifi is available across the whole park priced from an hour to a season – just buy a ticket online. Guests can also pay to use the leisure facilities at the other West Dorset Leisure Holiday Park in the area, Highlands End Holiday Park which has a sauna/steam room and a heated indoor pool. And if you just can’t bring yourself to walk that 150 metres for some beach fishing, you can take it easy instead at Golden Cap’s own fishing lake.

Powered gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: Great level pitches with power and water, plenty of room, clean, quiet and tidy site situated in a beautiful location. Shop and pub close so all you need really :-)

Disliked: Not sure about only having 2 showers in the gents as you could be waiting a while in the busier months

Powered grass campsite

Liked: .A very quiet site approx 100m from a shingle beach. The toilet and shower blocks are spotlessly clean with plenty of hot water, there is a laundry, washing up area and all the usual services for waste disposal, several clearly marked drinking water taps. There are a variety if pitch types eg grass or gravel some of which require levelling blocks, several stone blocks have been provided for guest usage. A small shop sells a variety of provisions including home made meals to take away. On the edge if the beach is a pub which also serves meals and has plenty of outside seating to enjoy the lovely views.

Liked: Scenery is beautiful every way you turn and it’s fI close to the beach. The toilets and showers were lovely and clean, the water hot and the showers roomy. The shop was well stocked, albeit expensive, with friendly staff. The ground wasn’t rocky for tent pitching.

Disliked: Long walk to the showers, toilets and washing up area from where we were pitched. No choice on the day we arrived.

Big Berries primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Wonderful location, great amenities and just an overall beautiful atmosphere and place to spend a relaxing few days. Local pub (The Anchor) is a great spot and so many nice views, walks, coffees. The beach was ideal for early morning swims and we will definitely be back!

Disliked: Nothing!

Big Berries primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful views Hot showers and clean toilets Everything you needed even an ironing board!

Disliked: Nothing the actually site can do but for me the slope was a challenge, you wouldn’t get the views without it but everything had to propped up.

Local attractions

Start at Stonebarrow Hill for 25 miles’ worth of walking trails around Golden Cap, making sure to pause after you puff uphill for the views across Lyme Bay to Dartmoor. There’s a National Trust information point, shops and toilets in an old radar station on the hill to make a pitstop at before taking the trail through Langdon Hill Wood, taking the Smugglers’ Trail, or clambering cliffwards to see the ancient Thorncombe Beacon and views to Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of the biggest shingle stretches in the country. A walk east from the beacon will take you to the seaside village and coastal views of Eype, or you can wander west to the beach at Charmouth for more fossil hunting. Other recommended day trips from Golden Cap are Lyme Regis with crazy golf on top of the promenade, the fishing village of Beer which can be combined with a trip to Seaton or Sidmouth, and the miles of sandy beach at West Bay with boat trips. If you have little animal enthusiasts along on your trip, take them to hand-feed the 600 swans at Abbotsbury Swannery, or to get nautical at Weymouth Sea Life Park. For more grownup west Dorset attractions try Forde Abbey, Sherborne Castle or the Haynes Motor Museum… the kids might not mind these too much if you then take them to Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum.
