  • Scenic seasonal site attached to the walled gardens at Moreton
  • New amenities block added in 2016
  • On the edge of Moreton village and enclosed by woodland
Frankly, you could go to The Walled Garden just for the gazebo. And picnic in it every day even if it rained – that, after all, is what a roof is for. And have a further picnic daily in different hideaways among the Victorian landscaped garden of this (frankly) gorgeous park in the Purbeck region of Dorset – that, after all, is what a holiday is for… As with most of Dorset, there’s not far to go from your pitchside to some splendid walks/days out/cream tea picnics around the countryside: The Walled Garden is on the edge of Moreton village on a River Frome ford, enclosed by woodland to wander in, bridleways to canter down and cycle paths on which to have a Purbeck pedal. The chalky downs of the Purbeck Hills lie a little to the south, leading down to white chalk cliffs and the eastern edge of the Jurassic Coast: frankly fab. The Walled Garden is a friendly and peaceful Purbeck place for families and couples in a parkland setting and well-kept amenities: the owners invested heavily after feedback from their first season and the site now has a new shower and toilet block with six showers and three additional toilets, as well as disabled facilities, several standpipes, mains water, showers with free hot water, washing-up sinks and hand basins. A café is also available on site, and local shops and garages are about a mile and a half away for essentials. Also within a mile and a half (about 25 minutes' walk via country roads without footpaths) is the train station at Morton, from whence guests can ride to other Dorset delights like Dorchester and the coast at Weymouth, Poole and Bournemouth. (if you don't want to walk, local taxi numbers are available from the café.) Frankly, you could build a base at The Walled Garden and stay put there for some time...

Route directions

Head west on the A35 and after Bere Regis, make a left onto the B3390, which runs from the A35 via Affpuddle to the A352 Weymouth road. Approximately 2 miles from Affpuddle after crossing the River Frome there is a small lane to the left signposted Moreton (if you miss this there is a crossroads a half-mile further, turn left for Moreton!). Follow the road past the tearooms and we are 100m on the right.

Local attractions

Within ambling distance in the Dorset countryside is Clouds Hill, the Grade II-listed cottage that once belonged to TE Lawrence (he of Lawrence of Arabia fame). It’s now a museum managed by the National Trust, with exhibitions on Lawrence’s life and most of his furniture and possessions left intact; more Arabian-related artefacts are displayed in the Lawrence of Arabia room at the Moreton Tea Rooms. Clouds Hill is on the Lawrence of Arabia Trail and has another main stop at St Nicholas’ Church, with Lawrence’s grave as well as engraved stained windows added by Laurence Whistler after the church was bombed in World War II. If you’re taking the trail, spare a few hours at its start or finish to steam through The Tank Museum at Bovington, over 300 vehicles in six roomy halls telling the tale of warfare from World War I to the present day. Up for more walls? The walled city of Wareham is about seven miles from The Walled Garden and is well worth a wandering day around its quay, along the River Frome and the mile along its Saxon walls; wander to the free Wareham Town Museum for info on the towns’ history and more on Lawrence of Arabia. Also at Wareham, the ape rescue centre Monkey World should give plenty to chatter about for all ages and is open daily all year round apart from Christmas Day. Corfe Castle (we’ll never tire of pointing out this was the inspiration for Kirrin Castle in Enid’s Blyton’s Famous Five) is about five miles to Wareham’s south-east. Feeling more coastwards? Take the train from Moreton, a ferry from Wareham Quay to Poole or a superly scenic drive to the beaches and red sandstone cliffs of the Jurassic Coast. Both Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, two of the most magic coastal sights in Britain, are within a five and a half mile drive of The Walled Garden: at Lulworth, make room to also see its seventeenth castle, and at Durdle Door – well, we suggest you just sit and stare.
