  • Luxury glamping with Bybrook River Valley views edging the Cotswolds
  • Bath and Castle Combe 15 minutes’ drive; Lacock 20 minutes
  • Insulated, well-designed yurt with a bathroom in a converted horse box
Whether you’re looking for a rural retreat, a city sightseeing break or a mash-up of the two, Applegates Glamping may well be just the spot for you – especially if you had Bath in mind and appreciate a few designer-y touches about your accommodation. You will lay your head in a stylishly furnished yurt with spectacular views across Somerset’s Bybrook River Valley on the edge of the Cotswold National Landscape. This yurt is on a working farm where chickens and horses, a big black-and-white cat (who loves having guests) and a Spanish rescue dog rule the roost. Sitting among poplar trees next to a lily pond, it’s insulated and warmed by a woodburning stove, which also doubles as a cooker. Luxury facilities include a hot shower and an outdoor bath – idyllic for soaking up the starry sky on clear nights – and there’s a barbecue and picnic table for alfresco dining. There’s a multitude of walks to follow from your peaceful leafy hideaway, which is only 15 minutes’ drive from the restaurants, shops and museums of Georgian-era Bath. If you’d rather travel by public transport, catch bus services 3 or 31 from Batheaston into the city centre. From Applegates, it’s half an hour’s walk to a local pub in Bathford, or 40 minutes to the well-known George Inn on the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath at Bathampton. You can also grab yourself a takeaway from Batheaston village (half an hour).

Local attractions

Horse-mad guests (and anyone who enjoys a day in the fresh air) can make a date with Badminton Horse Trials (20 minutes’ drive) over the first weekend in May, or you can hire a day boat to have a putter along the Kennet and Avon Canal from Bathampton (40 minutes’ walk/10 minutes’ drive). If you’d rather stick to dry land, follow the course of the canal to restored Claverton Pumping Station (90 minutes walk) dating from 1813 and open for tours. Historic villages abound in the area: cute Castle Combe (15 minutes’ drive) has been voted England’s prettiest village thanks to its mellow-stone riverside cottages, while exploring National Trust-owned Lacock (20 minutes) turns up an abbey used as a Harry Potter film location, indie shops and a brace of half-timbered inns that first opened their doors over five centuries ago. For more urban pursuits, turn your attention to gorgeous Bath (15 minutes), where you can bask in saunas and swim in a rooftop pool at Thermae Bath Spa, tour the ancient Roman baths and admire the soaring Gothic architecture of the abbey. Culture dealt with, it’s time to browse indie shops and department stores, seek out cosy pubs and dine on a multitude of world cuisines.
