  • Quiet rural park halfway between Bonnybridge and Falkirk
  • Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling all within a 40-minute drive
  • Highland cattle and horse-drawn carriage rides on site
Now, Bonnybridge may not be a place that’s particularly well known among tourists, but it’s certainly a spot that savvy Scotland travellers should have on their radar. Why so? Well, here’s a laidback place that’s handy not only for Falkirk (the centre of which is a 10-minute drive away) but also pretty much right in the middle of the excellent triangle formed by Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling – three excellent locations all with a travelling time of less than 40 minutes by car. Grab a berth at The Wheel Caravan Park, in a rural location just between Bonnybridge and Falkirk, for a break that can include jaunts to all these splendid cities and mix them up with country-style outings closer to home. There’s a fine network of walking/bike paths in the area around here, taking in some great scenery or leading to attractions like the Falkirk Wheel (a 10-minute stroll away, as you may have guessed from the site’s name…) It’s a peaceful setup on site, in a quiet setting surrounded by mature trees and shrubs and with shaggy Highland cattle in residence. As an added bonus, staff run horse-drawn carriage rides every day to give guests a memorable method of experiencing the local area. Along with all of this, guests have access to such facilities as a kitchen area, toilet and shower facilities and plenty of car parking space.

Local attractions

The sensible place to start is the Falkirk Wheel, an engineering masterpiece that connects the Forth & Clyde Canal and the Union Canal via a smart rotating boat lift. Getting there is easy: it’s a 20-minute walk from the caravan park via the Roughcastle Tunnel. Continue your ramble to take in the 30-metre-tall horse head sculptures known as the Kelpies, and trails and play area of The Helix parkland (both about four miles from the site). Other wanders from the site might take you to the historic grounds of Callendar House, or for an altogether spookier experience at the area known as the Falkirk Triangle, where UFO spottings have been recorded for more than 100 years. The rural surroundings mean plenty of access to such things as golf, fishing and horse riding locally, but it’s a fine idea to trade in all this countryside sooner or later for day trips to Stirling (25 minutes’ drive), Glasgow (half an hour) and Edinburgh (40 minutes).
