  • Set in rural Wales with spectacular views of the Brecon Beacons
  • A 15-minute drive from outdoor activity centres in Brecon
  • Horse-riding centre, farm park, shows, workshops, café and indoor play
Farmyard fun is the firm order of the day at Cantref Campsite, a family-friendly place three miles from Brecon town centre and surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Stay here and you’ll not just get to meet the friendly animals: guests are permitted to access the kids' farm park next-door for the duration of their stay, from arrival day to departure day. At the farm park, shows and workshops run every half-hour throughout the day, with antics including pet handling, bottle feeding lambs, tractor and trailer rides and madcap pig races. Now, it does occasionally rain in Wales, so the clever farm folk have installed a pleasingly spacious and heated indoor play area at the farm park in case the outdoor rides are too damp. Got a particular soft spot for the horses? You’re in the right place – the site’s also got a horse riding and pony trekking centre, catering for all abilities from baffled beginner to experienced horse handlers. For eats, Cantref Campsite's farmhouse café serves light lunchtime snacks, cakes and homemade specials and there are a couple of country pubs within a 10-minute drive.

Liked: The location - gorgeous views across to the mountains.

Disliked: Facilities - only 2 showers and 2 toilets for females for the whole of the site Pitches - very close together, would hate to be there when it’s busy. We arrived at just before 4:30pm, which i didnt think would be a problem as on site it says you can ring if you arrive after 5pm and someone will come and show you your pitch. Apparently they’d been ringing me and left a message as they didnt think i was coming. The pitches are extremely close together, so it would be awful when it’s busy. There was no lighting up to the toilet blocks, which are a good walk from pitches. The toilet/shower blocks looked tired. There are only two toilets and showers each for men and women. The shower barely got above Lukewarm even when turned fully on. There were hooks missing so minimum space to put clothes. The toilet flushes were broken but just about worked. There were signs and a dog bin for cleaning up after your dog but even though we were only campers there, someone had let there dog mess right in middle of the path to toilets. The one rubbish bin for the pitches was full and no idea when it was due to be emptied. We were given some leaflets about the site and farm, we noticed on way home that apparently there was a cafe on site but we weren’t shown it or told about it

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Stunning view, great pitch sizes, friendly staff.

Disliked: Screaming and shouting kids, loud music from other tents after 11pm every night. Other campsites does not allow loud noise after 10 or 11pm. We wanted to chill after our hikes but it was impossible because of the noise and noone did anything. Not enough toilets and showers. There was more toilets on the back but they were closed. Only 2 for ladies and 1 for man this is absolutely not enough when the Adventure Farm customers are using it as well. The light in the shower facility switched off in every few minutes so we ended up to have a shower in the dark because the sensore doesn't see people behind the doors.

Local attractions

Views out over the surrounding mountains and valleys will no doubt tip you off that there are plenty of options for mountain biking and hill walking nearby. Several biking and hiking routes start near the site, with heaps more around the rest of the Brecon Beacons National Park (including five mountain bike centres and 14 trails ranging from beginner to expert). If you’re up for other outdoorsy activities, activity centres in Brecon (15 minutes’ drive) can hook you up with days of canoeing, caving, climbing and sailing. For a real challenge, get set to scale Pen y Fan – south Wales’s highest peak is 20 minutes away (handily, the easiest route up is also the most convenient here – no need to let on to the folk back home.) For something a little gentler, take your binoculars to Craig Cerrig-Gleisiad or Talybont Reservoir (both about 20 minutes) for some excellent birdwatching, or crack on to Crickhowell Castle (25 minutes).
