  • Glamping on a hillside farm overlooking the Neusa reservoir
  • A 50-minute drive to Zipaquirá; an hour and a half to central Bogota
  • Bike hire, fishing and walking trails around the site
Take a quick peek at those pics… hard to believe the centre of Bogota is just an hour and a half’s drive away, eh? But indeed that’s the jaunt required to get to the gorgeous Neusa Hills Park, a glamping site on a hillside farm in the Cundinamarca department (although you may like to take a little longer over the journey to make a stop at the stunning salt cathedral in Zipaquirá along the way…) It’s all about the open air and stunning views here, whether you’re out and about wandering on the farm’s eco paths and mountain bike trails, taking boat rides or fishing on the Neusa reservoir or settling at your cosy cabin to gaze out over the lake from the terrace (or from inside, thanks to the huge picture window…) After you’ve raised a glass to the sunset, turn attentions to the communal areas which have games including billiards, table tennis and air hockey and a comfy lounge with fireplace and balcony. There’s a kitchen over there too (fully kitted out with cooking kit and crockery), and a barbecue’s on hand for grilling in the open air. For supplies you’ll need to stop off at the nearest supermarket, half an hour’s drive away, or head to the little town of Cogua (40 minutes). Alternatively, head down to the little cluster of waterside restaurants about four kilometres away to have your meals cooked for you.

Local attractions

First port of call clearly has to be Neusa reservoir, a short walk from the site, for days of lakeside strolling, boat trips and fishing for the shoals of trout that live in the waters. If you’re not successful on the fishing front, take the 40-minute drive up to Cogua to feast on fritanga – a local fave made up of a filling mix of roast pork, chicharron, salted potato, roasted chicken and guacamole. Equally tasty is a trip to the Zipaquirá salt cathedral (50 minutes’ drive), a spectacular site 200 metres underground with hand-carved sculptures and exhibits about the area’s geology and salt-producing history (licking the walls to confirm the saltiness is possible but not really recommended…) If you’ve not already explored the Colombian capital, it’s a fine idea to spend a day or two down in Bogota (an hour and a half away). A visit to the spectacular Gold Museum is a must, as is a tram or funicular trip up Monserrate Mountain for sweeping views over the city. Arty types may like to visit the Botero Museum and seek out street art, and there are lots more pretty things to see on a walk around the botanic gardens or the colonial Candelaria district.
