  • Small site in a farm on the banks of the Loire river
  • Spectacular accommodation in a spectacular setting
  • Fishing, hot tub, farm, meals delivered and bike and scooter hire
Just… wow. The accommodation on offer at this fab place on the banks of the Loire is simply stunning – and the site setting is pretty spectacular too. Canny travellers should determine to spend as much time as possible at Village Toue des Demoiselles, a lakeside site in Digoin, in the Allier department at the border of Auvergne and Burgundy. You'll need several days just lounging about in this smashing setting, and loads more to investigate the many leisure pursuits in the nearby countryside, such as canoeing and canal boating in the Loire river and Central Canal. Village Toue des Demoiselles has its own lake, on and around which the excellent accommodation is based. It's a splendid spot for fishing, as the lake is crammed with roach, pike, perch and catfish: hire kit on site if you haven't brought your own. Around the water, kids can meet the critters in the site's mini farm or, depending on season, proudly dig up carrots or collect eggs for the family's use. Meanwhile, a hot tub and a sauna are on site for grownup pampering. Plancha barbecues can be hired at reception, but you might (should) want to let the team sort your vittles out instead: order a picnic basket for your ventures, arrange lunch or dinner in your accommodation, or – additional pampering alert – ask for a champagne and foie gras basket to be delivered. Order all these from the bar, then stay around on its terrace for ice cream, beers or cocktails. Bikes, electric bikes, scooters and boats can be hired at reception, where you can also browse info on more stuff to see and do around this spectacular place.

Local attractions

Village Toue des Demoiselles has its own nature trail; just outside the site, the Observaloire is an activity and information centre on the history and nature of the Loire, with exhibitions, viewing points and events for kids and teens. Within a few hundred metres of the site, arrange canoes, kayaks or boats on site for a day trip along the local length of the Loire, or hire a bike to get out onto the nearby Voie Verte, part of a huge network of peaceful cycling paths all over France. A gentle pedal into Digoin town should take about 10 minutes via the Rue du Port, for a day around the ceramics museum, Castle of Chiseuil and yet more picnics by the Loire. From Digoin, it's 20 minutes' drive to the town of Paray-le-Monial, home of the much-visited pilgrimage centre of the Basilica du Sacré-Coeur, and just over an hour to the thermal spa town of Vichy. The animal and theme park Le PAL is 30 minutes' drive away.
