  • Eco-friendly site in a wildlife haven in south Auvergne
  • With botanical gardens, bird sanctuaries and a wellness centre
  • Canoe on the river Loire flowing right outside the site
In a gorgeous location on the banks of the river Loire, France's longest river, CosyCamp is an eco-friendly, award-winning and car-free site. Bring your binoculars, it's a birdwatching and wildlife haven. Plus, it's very much worth noting that this area in south Auvergne has been pulling in hikers, climbers, foragers and fisherfolk for centuries. There are botanical gardens on site (and a labyrinth), along with bird sanctuaries, a wellness centre and an equestrian centre at the park entrance. There's a heated outdoor pool and a small indoor pool to swim in, with more dipping opportunities in the Loire flowing right in front of the site – or might you prefer to take out one of the canoes...? The facilities are pretty cosy too. They include modern and disabled-accessible toilet and shower blocks (one heated in colder weather), family-friendly changing rooms, hairdryers and a launderette with a washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board. The big family room has a bar and restaurant, a TV corner, a library, board games and wooden games; CosyCamp organises nightly campfires too.

Local attractions

Towards the town of Le Puy-en-Velay is the village of Chamalières-sur-Loire, set in a landscape of gorges between Artias Castle and Gerbizon Mount at an altitude of 550 metres. The village was built around a Roman church and has been the home of Benedictine monks and pilgrims for over eight centuries; it still welcomes pilgrims today and is a popular stopping point on the pilgrimage route from Saint-Jacques de Compostela between Lyon and Le Puy-en-Velay. Also in the area are heaps of opps for climbing and hiking – ask the team for its best picks or go bravely and stonily forth to the rock climbing site in Chamalières sur Loire. (Highly serious rock climbing for the highly brave can be found at the Via-ferrata des Juscles within 20km of CosyCamp) The white sandstone and black volcanic breccia stripes of Le Puy Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are a splendid sight and should be seen forthwith.
