Camping La Roseraie d'Omaha is in the quiet little settlement of Surrain, with easy proximity to several World War II memorials and watersports at Omaha beach. Family run, the site is six kilometres from Omaha beach and the coastal commune of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, and within 20 minutes’ drive of medieval Bayeux and Port-en-Bessin-Huppain. For getting out to tour the locale, hire a bike on site and have a pleasant 25-minute pedal to the sands and sea of Omaha beach, or take the car to be there in 10. Leisure days on site can be spent around the covered and heated pool or zipping down the waterslide; a paddling pool is on site too, and the pool area is surrounded by a roomy sun terrace furnished with loungers. Out of the water, there's a miniature golf course and tennis courts, and kids will remain most entertained by the various other activities and inflatables on hand for their amusement. Come mealtimes, guests can freely borrow barbecues on which to sizzle up their sausages and burgers, or toddle over to the cosy bar and restaurant for simple plats du jour to eat in or take away. Fresh baguettes and pastries are delivered every morning if you order the day before; a small shop is on site too.

Local attractions

Three World War II monuments are within easy reach of Camping La Roseraie d'Omaha, all within 10 minutes by car or, if you’re feeling active, 25 minutes by bike (handily, you can hire one on site if you haven’t got your own). First stop on the way to the coast is the Overlord Museum, which chronicles the landings using soldiers’ personal effects and reconstructions comprising more than 35 vehicles, tanks and guns. Close by, see more than 9,000 graves at the American Cemetery before then heading coastwards to Omaha beach and its D-Day Monument. Watersports like windsurfing, sailing, sea kayaking, paddleboarding and jetskiing are available from this stretch of coastline, which is also popular for sea fishing and brisk and highly scenic coastal wanders. If you’re after yet more spectacular vistas, countryside ambling options and wildlife watching, the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Regional Natural Park is a short drive away. You could also head for more World War II history at Bayeux’s Battle of Normandy Memorial Museum and the British Cemetary, or for something depicting bloody wartime events from several hundred years earlier, to the town’s museum to goggle the world-famed Bayeux Tapestry.
