  • In the dunes behind an 800-metre beach
  • Sailing centre next door; sea fishing trips
  • Sailing and sea fishing trips from the site
Have you ever dug for clams among the sands of beaut Brittany? How about foraging for shellfish? Finding your sea legs on deep blue waters off the Côte des Sables? Say a sailorlike Aaarrr to all this at Finistère's Camping Village de Roguennic – among the spectacular scenery surrounding the coastal town of Cléder. Watery and coastal activities galore are all around this pretty site, set in the dunes behind an 800-metre beach on Brittany's north coast. Sea legs and a sturdy nautical nerve can be developed for beginners or improved on for wannabe experts at the sailing school right next door; several coastal hiking trails start from the site, and the amiable and knowledgeable Village de Roguennic team can sort sea fishing trips for anglers who'd like it. Clam digging and shellfish picking are popular pastimes to delve into at the nearby beaches, to then fry up on a barbecue back at base, accompanied by tasty regional treats like artichokes and shallots (Cléder is in a green belt area and is famed for the quality of its local produce; pick up bits and pieces at the excellent Saturday morning market of Plouescat, five kilometres from town, or at the Wednesday market of Roscoff, 15 kilometres away). Pastimes of all sorts run regularly on site during the summer too, including cookery, archery, beach games and other activities for kids during the day, and family-friendly entertainment such as pétanque tournaments, karaoke and bingo in the evenings. A miniature golf course is next door to the site. A heated and covered pool and a paddling pool are also around to keep you entertained, along with pétanque, a play area and tennis. A restaurant with takeaway and a supermarket with fresh bread and pastries baked on site will take care of some of your foodie needs – not all, however, as you'll want to be digging for clams or foraging for shellfish while you're on this part of Brittany coast too.

Local attractions

Walking and cycling trails start from the site: hire a bike from the team or take off on foot to investigate the spectacular Breton coastline all around, past sandy beaches, peaceful coves and protected dunes. A tourist office with info on the lengthy heritage and sizeable historic attractions of the region is in Cléder. The port and seaside resort of Roscoff, with its handsome alleyways, decorated houses, Gothic-style church and botanical gardens, is 25 minutes' drive north-east kilometres from the site. This is also the setoff point for the 15-minute ferry to the Île de Batz, to see its beaches, lighthouse and exotic gardens. Bob around in another boat from Carantec, a little further along the coast from Roscoff, to have a look at the Château du Taureau, spectacularly set on one of the tiny rocky islands of Morlaix Bay. Morlaix town, in the foothills of the Monts d'Arrée mountains, should also be on the must-see list, for its handsome viaduct and splendid overhanging houses. If you're after something really remote, or keen to get in a bit of birdwatching, take another boat trip from Perros-Guirec, well worth the hour and a half drive to access the beaut surroundings and flocks of birdlife of Les Sept Îles, off the Pink Granite Coast. Puffins, guillemots, fulmars and kittiwakes are among the many species that live here, among a rocky and green landscape where humans have rarely lived.
