  • Wooded camping pitches in 50 hectares on a farm near Azay-le-Ferron
  • In the Brenne Regional Nature Park; visitor centre 20 minutes’ drive
  • Snacks, picninc service and restaurant on site; direct access to walks
Tucked away in the Brenne Regional Nature Park, Ferme du Caroire is a wild-camping spot with tree-shaded pitches on a working farm near Azay-le-Ferron in Indre. You can pick your pitch on arrival, and with a choice of 50 hectares to choose from, there’s no need ever to see another soul on this quiet, rural site. What is definite however, is that you will meet animals. Three generations of the Vandooren family have farmed on this land; they breed goats and cows and you’ll see them grazing in nearby fields. If you’d like to learn more about the farm set up, you also have the chance to participate in feeding and milking – ask on arrival at the site. You’ll never go hungry here, as there’s an all-day service in the simple, wooden restaurant, kicking off with breakfast and brunch, serving burgers and hot dogs later in the day and winding up with dinner. You can also taste the fruit of the Vandoorens’ labours as snacking platters of homemade terrines and goats’ cheeses are available to buy on site, and you can order picnics if you’re off out exploring the region. Please just be sure to book everything 24 hours in advance. Amenities include a shower block and recycling facilities, but note as there is no electricity, you’ll need to bring torches from home.

Liked: The farm, restaurant and rustic feel were just what we were looking for. The owner was amazing and very helpful. She prepared our dinner for our late arrival, goat burger and goats cheese lasagne, with French cider, and allowed us to walk our dogs off the leads in the fields. We sat under the trees in the evening with the sound of the goats as company. Clean, unisex toilets and amazing shower. Will definitely return when we are in the area again.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

What with all the animal feeding and 50 hectares of farmland to explore, you may never find time to leave Ferme du Caroire, but there’s plenty to keep you entertained just off the farm too – the Castle Park and Gardens of Azay-le-Ferron (five minutes’ drive) for a start, where stately apartments are open for guided tours and formal gardens for strolls at a magnificent 17th-century château. If you’re keen to get back to nature, Brenne Regional Nature Park is known for its mixture of lakes and moorland, a haven for wading birds like herons and bitterns. You can learn more about the park’s abundant wildlife at the Maison du Parc visitor centre (20 minutes) and learn about its backstory from prehistoric times to the present in the Ecomusée de la Brenne (25 minutes). Discovery trails like the Sentier du Blizon (20 minutes) wend their way through remote corners of the park, and you can swim, sunbathe or get out on the water on paddleboards and kayaks at the Étang de Bellebouche (25 minutes).
