  • Well-equipped family site by a lake on the edge of Champagney
  • Access to seven Vosges Saônoises walking trails in the village
  • Outdoor pool, fishing, snack bar and summer kids' club on site
Lakeside living is the order of the day at Camping des Ballastières, a family-friendly Franche-Comté site in a lovely spot between a river and two lakes on the edge of Champagney. Those two lakes are a real highlight, spreading out over 40 and 32 acres respectively and giving guests easy access to peaceful days of fishing (daily and weekly passes available to buy on site). A short walk along the shoreline takes you to a sandy beach area for swims, paddling and sunbathing – although you don’t have to go that far for a cooling dip if you don’t want, as there’s also an open-air pool on site (open in high season and with a paddling pool and a Jacuzzi too). There’s plenty to keep you busy on site when you’re not swimming or fishing, as well – this well-equipped site also has a pétanque court, a volleyball court, an archery area and a playground and adventure trails for the kids. A kids’ club runs each morning in summer, and evenings are filled with things like karaoke nights, after-dark swims and themed evenings. The lakes are quite a draw for this site, but they’re not the only landscape features around – this pretty spot is just at the foot of the Massif des Vosges Saônoises, so that means there’s lots of lovely scenery around to explore on walks or bike rides as well. Back on site you’ll be able to fill up at the snack bar or grocery shop, and there are other amenities including a launderette and well-equipped bathrooms. Bigger shops and more places to eat are 10-15 minutes’ walk away in Champagney.

Local attractions

Champagney makes a good base for those planning to do a bit of walking on their holiday, as there are seven walking trails starting in the village and taking you up into the Vosges Saônoises. And if that’s not enough you can head out on more trails through the Ballons des Vosges Regional Natural Park (about 40 minutes’ drive away). As you tour the area you may like to stop off in Belfort (25 minutes) to see its cathedral and citadel, or tick off other historic sights like Château Montbéliard (35 minutes) and Mont-Bart Fort (45 minutes). That said, if you’ve got energetic kids in tow, perhaps the adventure trails at Acropark au Ballon d'Alsace Vosges (35 minutes) might be more their style. Something a little bit different? Plan trips to the Notre-Dame du Haut chapel (10 minutes), designed by the famed architect Le Corbusier, visit the Mine Museum in Ronchamp (five minutes) or Maison de la Négritude (15 minutes’ walk), a black history and human rights museum.
