  • Family camping on shaded pitches on the edge of the Dordogne region
  • Turenne and Curemonte 15 minutes’ drive; 40 minutes to Rocamadour
  • Swimming pool, games room, live music, restaurant and takeaway on site
If you’re after an activity-filled holiday in a quiet corner of Limousin, Camping Au Bois Dormant covers both bases for you. Set in an oak forest over an area of more than three hectares, it has grass pitches shaded by mature trees to keep you all cool in summer and a whole host of activities to keep everyone busy. Laid out with families in mind, one of the biggest attractions at the campsite is the swimming pool with a waterslide, plus a paddling pool for younger children – both are open in July and August. Playgrounds and outdoor games including table tennis, archery and volleyball are on hand for kids, there’s a games room with pool table and dart boards (great for keeping teens occupied), plus a couple of pétanque courts and a football pitch for leisurely family competitions. Night-times are also taken care of during the main school holidays, when the events team organises barbecue nights, live music and karaoke sessions. You can drift around from pool to café all day, take out food to eat by your tent, or let someone else do the hard work and eat in the on-site restaurant in the evening. Site amenities include a launderette and drying room to keep everyone looking neat and tidy, a parent-and-baby washroom, and a shower block.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Owner at reception friendly. Pitch had lot of trees in it rather than just at the edges, which gave shelter from sun, which was fierce. Shower block fine, lots of sinks for washing up.

Disliked: Although the trees gave plenty of shelter, there were so many midges/tiny flies or mosquitos that we suffered a lot with bites. I don’t know if it would have been improved with spraying, as other sites had trees and hedges but fewer troublesome flies. Also time of year may have made a difference as we went in August and probably earlier in the year we would not have struggled so much.

Bien cordialement.

Local attractions

Camping Au Bois Dormant is in pole position for exploring gorgeous Dordogne villages including medieval Rocamadour (40 minutes’ drive), with its narrow streets packed with indie shops and restaurants with panoramic views. Closer to home, Collonges-la-Rouge (10 minutes) offers up chestnut orchards and steep vineyards to tour. Other pretty places to consider visiting include hillside Turenne (15 minutes), topped by a ruined castle, while Curemonte (both 15 minutes) offers the remains of two castles, a splendid chateau and a buzzy Wednesday afternoon farmers’ market. With views of the Dordogne valley, Loubressac (half an hour) is a lovely and historic village to wander around and have a beer or two, and Carennac (20 minutes) has a photogenic mix of medieval and Renaissance architecture. If you’d rather get active on your Dordogne holiday, there’s a riding centre a 10-minute walk from the site, a golf course close by, and canoeing on the Dordogne river (both 20 minutes’ drive) – and if the kids deserve a treat, let them loose on the slides at Parc de Loisirs la Saule (15 minutes).
