Twitchers, this is the place to flock. Camping Azun Nature is in a bird refuge in the Pyrénées National Park, where ornithologists of all ages can borrow binoculars and guides to spy on the winged species around, or tag along on a guided birdwatching wander to see them with expert help. And if you too want to soar way up high, free as a bird above this spectacular part of France? Paraglide this mountainous region right over the site, part of a dizzying array of outdoor activities in these parts that also includes mountain hikes and climbs. And skiing: a cross-country skiing area is 10 minutes' drive away and downhill slopes are within half an hour. This peaceful little site is between the village of Aucun and the Gave d'Azun river in the Pyrénées National Park, in a serene setting with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains (take a look at the site pics to have your jaw properly drop). There are plenty of picks for leisure when you're not out and about among the mountains, including a pétanque court, table tennis and a multisports pitch that can be set up for volleyball, football or badminton. A TV room and a games room are also around if you want to take things more gently. Groceries and fresh bread are available for sale at the site shop.

Local attractions

Camping Azun Nature is a 20-minute walk from the paragliding schools in Aucun, and 500 metres from fishing in the Gave d'Azun river. More fishing – and walking – is at the Barrage du Tech, 10 kilometres away, where you can land trout or take the signposted trail. It's a cinch from the site too to hike to many of the major sights of the Hautes-Pyrénées, such as the Cirque de Gavarnie, Pic du Midi and the Pont d'Espagne, or to access the 210 kilometres of mountain bike trails in the Pyrénées National Park. After fishing at the Barrage du Tech, strap on your skis or snowshoes in the dam's surrounding Val d'Azun, the biggest Nordic ski resort in the Hautes Pyrenees. Its two main ski areas are Col du Soulor and Col de Couraduque, 18 kilometres apart; it's also a top spot for sledging and for kids, who can ride the magic carpet or snow groomer at the Nordic Park children’s area, or hike along the two themed nature trails. Downhill skiing is at Cauterets, 25 kilometres away. And if you're here for animal adventures? Bears, marmots, deer and more are at the Pyrénées Animal Park 10 kilometres away, and many more cawing creatures at the Donjon des Aigles bird park, within 12.
