  • Dog-friendly site in La Ferté-Bernard with direct access to a lake
  • Le Mans 45 minutes’ drive; Perche Regional Natural Park 50 minutes
  • Close to a leisure centre with a supervised beach and canoe rental
Canals, lakes and the Huisne river make up the watery landscape around the town of La Ferté-Bernard, in the north-eastern corner of the Sarthe department. And on the edge of town (five minutes’ drive or a 20-minute walk) is peaceful Camping La Venise de l’Ouest (literally, ‘Venice of the West’). This is a good spot if you’re after a little R&R in the shade of tall trees, with the utmost exertion being a game of pétanque while the kids explore the play area, or a stroll with your four-legged friend. But that would mean missing out on what is arguably this site’s main selling point: its proximity to the water. La Venise de l’Ouest is about 50 metres from a lake where a couple of outfits hire canoes, paddleboards and sailing and pedal boats. The lake is a popular wild swimming hub, with a lifeguard on duty in July and August (afternoons only), and there are also areas for fishing. There’s plenty to do on terra firma, too. Adjacent to the site is a lakefront leisure centre with table tennis, sports courts (from beach volleyball, to football) and a skate park, as well as hiking and BMX trails. On site, the toilet block includes facilities for disabled guests, and there’s also a launderette and a drying room (a welcome feature after spending the entire day in the water), plus recycling points.

Local attractions

A medieval town with cobbled streets and half-timbered houses, La Ferté-Bernard spreads around the Eglise Notre Dame des Marais, a Gothic building with buttresses topped by elegantly decorated spires. Explore the town on foot or on the miniature train that runs in the summer months. Another splendid Gothic structure is the Cathedral of Saint Julian in Le Mans (45 minutes’ drive). Not far from the cathedral, the Musée de Tessé has collections of Egyptian artefacts and Renaissance art, while the Museum of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, on the outskirts of the city, explores the history of this renowned endurance car race next to the track where it happens. The Perche Regional Natural Park (50 minutes) is punctuated by pretty villages, castles and abbeys, as well as spectacular natural landscapes like the oak woods at Bellême forest (home to the 350-year-old Chêne de l’École oak tree), the peaceful Étang de la Benette pond, or the Tourbière de Commeauche peat bog, known for its wild orchids.
