Fortuitously, there's a hot tub at this Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur site. Also fortuitously, a massage centre is a few minutes' stroll away. Both of which make up a jolly sensible state of affairs given the mighty amount of active options around this mountainous park, from hiking and mountain bike trails starting straight from the grounds to swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, wakeboarding and waterskiing at Lac de Serre-Ponçon within easy day trip distance. Camping Les Auches is on a plateau 1,300 metres high up in the Hautes-Alpes, on the edge of the Écrins National Park and a few minutes' stroll from the village of Ancelle. Hiking and biking trails begin from here into the Chamsaur valley; fishing and horse riding can be had within a few kilometres, and Ancelle is well known as a tourist spot for its outdoor activities in months of warm and cool. So you'll certainly at some point need to make yourself acquainted with that hot tub. You could also float lazily in the heated outdoor pool, splendidly set among magnif mountain views, or lounge about nearby while the kids let loose in the paddling pool or at the playground and bouncy castle. The site also has wifi access, a pétanque court and a TV room for your family fun; for food, a snack bar is open in high season.

Local attractions

Hiking and mountain bike trails in the Chamsaur valley leave from the site; valley river fishing is within two kilometres, and horse and pony riding can be booked within a few hundred metres; browse the info at the Ancelle tourist info to take your active pick. Also close by are a spa with those massage treatments essential after a day hiking or mountain biking; whitewater sports five kilometres away, and tennis courts within a kilometre. If you're up for getting mighty active indeed, ask the staff or the Ancelle tourist office team about paragliding trips around this spectacular part of the Hautes-Alps. About 45 minutes' south, take your water legs and sense of adventure to Lac de Serre-Ponçon, one of the biggest artificial lakes in Europe at 3,000 hectares. Take your pick from paddleboarding, kayaking and windsurfing to get out onto the waters here; around the lake, there's a beach to lounge on and trails for horse riding, hiking and mountain biking, all among a spectacular mountain setting.
