  • Dog-friendly site in the centre of the Vulkaneifel
  • A 10-minute drive to the Volcanic Eifel Nature Park
  • Fishing lake on site and restaurants within walking distance
Hiking through volcanic fields? Cycling, fishing, swimming and skiing? A peaceful, dog-friendly base? If that ticks a few of your boxes, base yourself at the Campingpark Dockweiler Mühle in the centre of the Vulkaneifel. This dog-friendly place is on the outskirts of a dreamy Eifel village named Dockweiler and excellent for active or lazy holidays. The western Germany Eifel mountain range has a volcanic field and a geopark, where there are maar craters and cinder cones. It’s called the Volcanic Eifel Nature Park, and it’s only 10 minutes’ drive away. That’s one place for the keen hikers to get stuck into, but anglers are well-catered to here too. The site is right opposite a fishing lake (and it’s one of a number of fishing lakes within a short drive of the site where you might bag a big catch). Dockweiler village has a set of restaurants within five to 10 minutes’ walk of the site if you’d like to grab some baked goods, a meal or something else tasty. Those raring to rustle up a barbecue (and feed any grisly bits to their dog) can source supplies in the supermarket five minutes’ drive away too. Whether you’re here to get active, scope out historical sites or simply chill out with the family, there’s a nice selection of facilities to lean back on. These include a play area by the lake, toilets, showers and a launderette.

Local attractions

Getting to know the volcanic Eifel landscape isn’t too tricky with Vulkanhaus Strohn (25 minutes’ drive) nearby. It has exhibits all about unusual volcanic activity in the area. Volcanic fields out the way, your next hiking destination might be the forests and meadows surrounding the hilltop castle Eagle and Wolf Park Kasselburg (15 minutes’ drive). On top of a basalt mound, this is a scenic spot for a hike indeed and there’s a pack of wolves living there too. More animals can be tracked down at the drive-through Wildlife and adventure park Daun (15 minutes). Still part of the volcanic landscape, it’s a stunning eight-kilometre drive (and creatures you’ll see on the way include monkeys, yak and llamas). For an adrenaline rush, the Nurburgring (25 minutes) Grand Prix racing track runs driving experiences and backstage tours. That’s one for the motor racing fans to get properly stuck into.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Super freundliches Personal. Hundefreundlich mit Willkommenspaket. Saubere Anlage. Toiletten und Duschanlage wurden gerade modernisiert, man wurde aber drauf hingewiesen, trotzdem sauber.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Quiet location. Pitches reasonable size. Friendly receptionist. Clean toilets and shower facilities.

Disliked: Showers are coin operated. €1 gives you about 10 mins. Reception had plenty of change so I got some when checking in. The pitches are on terraces on a hill and were a reasonable size but there isn't a lot of maneuvering room as it is a narrow road in front of the pitches and it drops off the other side so long vehicles may struggle if the adjacent pitch is occupied.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Lovely peaceful site, view of the fishing lake, big pitch, close to walking and cycling routes just above the site, dog friendly.

Disliked: Very rude man shouting he wanted to empty the coin machine whilst I was having a shower next to it. Didn't realise what he wanted at first not speaking the lingo very well, so felt I had to open the door with just a towel round me to see why he was shouting so much. He then huffed and puffed past me to the machine to empty it instead of waiting until I'd finished. The man clearly had an anger problem and the site should not allow him in the showers shouting through doors at women who are naked and in the middle of a shower.
