  • Arte Sella open-air art gallery 50 minutes’ drive; Trento one hour
  • Outdoor pool, playground and sports fields; wellness area
Alpine hikers, listen up: this might well be the place for your next holiday. Camping Valmalene sits in a green valley in the Lagorai Mountains, an Alpine range in the north eastern Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige. Several hiking and mountain-biking trails start nearby, which makes this site popular with active folks. There are also caves and waterfalls to explore, like the Cascata del Salton (half an hour’s drive); rafting and canoeing on the Brenta river (half an hour’s drive); plus several via Ferrata climbing routes, including the Ferrata Dino Buzzati (one hour), which reaches a vertiginous 2,500 metres of altitude. However, that’s not to say that you can’t have plenty of R&R here, too. While the kids tire themselves out in the playground, you can chill by the side of the heated outdoor pool (maybe with a book from the communal library), taking in views of forested peaks. Those who want to crank the relaxation up a notch head to the wellness centre for a steam or a sauna. (Please note, there is an additional fee for this.) When it’s time for family activities, there are tennis, volleyball and pétanque courts, plus a five-a-side football pitch. After all that physical exertion, you might well be in the mood for some sustenance. The wood-clad restaurant serves wood-fired pizzas, as well as regional dishes such as canederli bread dumplings and smoked trout. When you’d rather fire up the barbecue, you can stock up on grillable items at the on-site shop or in Pieve Tesino (10 minutes). Modern toilet and shower blocks include facilities for disabled guests, and there is also a launderette with irons and ironing boards.

Local attractions

Book a guided visit at the modern Osservatorio Astronomico del Celado (25 minutes’ drive), which makes the most of this area’s extremely low levels of light pollution. On a clear night you might be able to spot the planets of the Moon and assorted galaxies through the powerful telescope in the dome. Arte Sella (50 minutes) is an open-air gallery in the woods. The natural setting enhances and works in conjunction with sculptures by the likes of Ettore Sottsass and Kengo Kuma. The Cattedrale Vegetale is a copse of trees planted in a pattern that replicates the architecture of a cathedral. On the banks of the Adige river, Trento (one hour) is known for the imposing 13th-century Buonconsiglio Castle, which houses art and archaeological collections. The MUSE museum, in a contemporary building designed by Renzo Piano, has exhibits on alpine geology and nature, plus a sustainability gallery.
