  • In the Fort Bravo Western theme park in the Tabernas Desert
  • Between Tabernas town and Oasys MiniHollywood: each 10 mins' drive
  • Pool, restaurant, daily Western films and a vintage-style saloon bar
Get a full flavour of America’s Wild West in Spain at the Andalucia site of Camping Fort Bravo, in the famed Tabernas Desert where many Hollywood spaghetti Western films were shot (many cowboys were shot here too, but that’s another story...). Movie moguls have flocked to the Tabernas Desert to shoot Westerns for decades, as its surrounding Almeria province is the driest region in all of Europe and the only place on the continent with a desert environment (if you’ve seen The Good, The Bad and the Ugly or a Fistful of Dollars, that’s Spanish scenery in the background, not 19th-century American). Sensibly, the area these days is also a magnet for movie buffs, who mosey along to see the desert, its film sets and the splendid theme park of Fort Bravo. If your fistful of dollars is somewhat lacking, you’ll be chuffed indeed to hear that entrance to the theme park is included in the price at Camping Fort Bravo, so you can spend your days roaming around set and procuring beer in the saloon. Westerns are shown daily on site (naturally), at the Fort Bravo cinema, open every day. Should your attentions turn from all things Western, a pool is back on site to cool off in, and an air-conditioned restaurant is open at the theme park in high season. A snack bar service in the saloon dishes up pizzas and hot snacks throughout the day at other times of the year. The site also has a laundry area, a common room, toilets, showers and free wifi.

Local attractions

Once you’ve had a taster of the Western life at the park, get along to Oasys MiniHollywood (10 minutes’ drive), to walk on the film sets once frequented by Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot. Western shows and can-can dances keep that Wild West spirit alive, and there’s also a waterpark and zoo for those who fancy stepping back into the present day. Not done with desert life yet? Local guides run tours through the Tabernas, or you can take a (careful) walk through the spiky succulents at Cactus Nijar garden (35 minutes). All that sunshine goes a long way towards providing power too – if you’ve ever wondered exactly how that works, take a tour of Plataforma Solar de Almería (20 minutes). It’s easy to forget given the surrounds, but this is southern Spain – an area packed with stunning Moorish architecture. The most famed of the lot locally must be the Alhambra in Granada (an hour and a half away), but there’s also much to meander around in Almería (half an hour), which also has a beach for swims after you’ve done the history bit.
