  • Peaceful family-friendly site on edge of Sierra Nevada National Park
  • Hiking, biking, horse riding and winter sports within 30 mins’ drive
  • A 35-min drive from the historic sites of Granada
Can’t decide if you’re more at home in the city or mountains? At Camping Restaurante Ruta del Purche, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the village of Monachil in the province of Granada, Andalusia, have the bet of both. Halfway between Granada and the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Ruta del Purche is well placed for urban and rural getaways. Take a trip to Granada, 35 minutes away, to wander the streets and explore the city’s history, or travel for 20 minutes into the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains, home to skiing, tobogganing and ice skating in the winter, and hiking, biking and horse riding trails in the summer. On the days when you don’t feel like moving far, there’s plenty to keep you busy on site: let the kids blow off steam in the play area while you test your mettle at the climbing wall, then you can all jump in the pool to cool off. An on-site restaurant serves traditional and typically rural meals; if nothing on the menu gets you drooling, barbecues are welcome on site, so pick up supplies from the supermarket in Monachil, or forego cooking and head to one of the restaurants within half an hour of Rute del Purche.

Local attractions

There’s plenty to explore in the scenic countryside around Camping Restaurante Ruta del Purche: start with Los Cahorros gorge 15 minutes' drive from the site, for rock climbing or setting out along the Rio Monachil hiking route which follows the Monachil river along gorges and across suspension bridges. If you’re after something a little less energetic, travel the 30 minutes to the village of Güejar Sierra for a tour around the tiled streets of whitewashed houses, then travel on to the Canales reservoir for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. The nearby city of Granada is an absolute must-see… You can go shopping, walk the medieval streets or eat out, of course, but it’s the buildings you’ll really want to visit for: make sure you get to the world-famous Alhambra palace fortress, the spectacular Generalife and Carmen de Los Mártires gardens, the stunning baroque Basilica de San Juan de Dios and the sky-scraping Sacromonte Abbey. At this point, the kids will probably be getting pretty fed up of dusty old palaces – give them a break with a trip to the Science Park so they can learn about humankind, our planet and the stars, then head to Aquaola Water Park for swimming, slides and rapids.
