  • Spectacular mountain view site in the Liébana valley
  • A kilometre from Potes, on the St James's Way pilgrimage route
  • Highly scenic outdoor pool area and restaurant terrace
Hankering after somewhere with cracking mountain views in all directions, a peaceful, friendly and chilled out vibe, good gastronomy and spotless facilities? And how about easy access to a whole heap of outdoorsy activities ranging from simple hiking and mountain biking to the more adrenalised pursuits of Via Ferrata climbing and paragliding, or perhaps hunting and fishing for your own fodder, or snowshoeing and speeding cross country on skis during winter? All this and more is sorted at this scenic mountain site. Camping La Viorna is a mere kilometre from Potes, right in the middle of the Liébana valley and – handily for hikers – is on one of the most popular routes on the St James's Way pilgrimage route, within 20 minutes’ walk of the spectacular 12th-century Santo Toribio de Liébana monastery. Highly pleasing on the eye, nearby Potes also has lots of little restaurants to choose from when opting to dine off site – be sure to sample the traditional local fare (cocido lebaniego and game stews), and treat yourself to a tipple or two of the local liqueur, orujo, perhaps planning to walk it all off afterwards with an amble round the old quarter. When it comes to fuelling up on base after a long day’s sightseeing, settle back and venture to stay awhile on the terrace, for the Cantabrian cuisine served up here by the friendly bar-restaurant team is fab, and the views out over the Picos de Europa are even fabber. When you’re not hanging out in utter awe on the terrace, you’ll most likely instead be spied over at the pool area: generously sized it has, as you might expect, got smashing mountain vistas too: there’s a raised grassy area next to the paved poolside to facilitate long bouts of lolling, as well as several shaded spots are around to take shelter under should your skin be prone to scorching. For light between-swim snacky stuff, you can pick this up at the little on-site shop, which also sells a bunch of other handy essentials. And what do previous guests say? The word ‘pristine’ pops up regularly in lots of their reviews, whether they’re gushing about the shower and toilet facilities, the pools, or the general appearance of the grounds. Each of the varied pitches is, of course, meticulously maintained, and lies under the partial shade of a lush mature tree, surrounded most splendidly by a carpet of lush and lovely grass.

Local attractions

The site’s Liébana valley setting is reached by venturing through a spectacular gorge hewn out of the Picos de Europa mountains; with tons of walking trails around the valley, hiking is a principal draw around here, as walkers are taken along trails between the likes of Dobarganes village and Pico Jano; Pembes and Cosgaya, Urdón and Tresviso and Fuente Dé and Liordes. For a spot of lofty sightseeing, take to the Fuente Dé cable car from drivable Fuente Dé: best hold onto your hats, as it speeds in four minutes to the top of the Picos Massif, 1823 metres above sea level; and when you get there, brace yourself further for the spectacularness of the vistas. For further scenic sightseeing, the ancient forests of Tama and Cillórigo are a quick and simple drive too, and you can reach the edge of the Picos de Europa National Park in around 15 minutes’ drive. If you’re into delving into local history that’s within walking distance, then there’s plenty of of that also: the local town of Potes has a splendid old quarter to stroll around, and the spectacular 12th-century Santo Toribio de Liébana monastery is less than 20 minutes’ walk from the site.
