  • Peaceful site on the Costa del Azahar with direct access to the beach
  • Benicàssim five minutes’ drive; Valencia one hour and five minutes
  • Seasonal pool and playground; launderette; well-equipped tents
You’ve done the Costa del Sol and the Costa Brava… now it’s time to explore what is arguably a lesser known (though by no means less attractive) stretch of Mediterranean shore. Set your GPS for the Costa del Azahar and Kampaoh Benicassim, which sits just on the outskirts of the coastal town of the same name, host of the annual Benicàssim International Festival (FIB) of music (three days in July). A five-minute drive (or a half-hour walk) takes you right into town, with its buzzing dining scene (as well as plenty of supermarkets and independent shops). However, the real advantage of this peaceful site’s location is its proximity (and direct access) to a wide, sandy beach with palm trees and shallow (and mostly calm) waters. On days when the sea is too rough for your liking, the action moves to the large seasonal on-site pool, open from 11am to 3pm and 4pm to 8pm. And while the kids splash around in the water (or blow off some steam in the recreation area), you can unwind, stretch out on a sun lounger and take in splendid views of nearby mountains like the Monte de Santa Àgueda, a popular hiking destination (15 minutes’ drive). Shaded by pine trees, safari tents come with comfortable beds, tables and chairs, mosquito nets and bamboo rails to hang your clothes, plus decorative touches like miniature potted plants and fairy lights. Oh, and a fridge to keep your cervezas nice and cool… There is a restaurant on site and a small supermarket, as well as a toilet block with hot-water showers and a launderette.

Local attractions

The nature reserve of Desert de les Palmes (20 minutes’ drive) is laced with hiking trails skirted by fragrant Mediterranean vegetation – from pine trees to juniper shrubs. Keep your ears open for the song of warblers, and your eyes peeled for kestrels and peregrine falcons hovering above the trees. Several imposing fortresses in the area date back to the centuries of Islamic occupation. They include the Castell d’Alcalà de Xivert (40 minutes) and the Castell de Santa Magdalena de Polpís (45 minutes), both in ruins and both offering splendid views of the valley to the north of the Sierra de Irta mountain range. The Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias in Valencia (one hour and five minutes) is a modern complex of spectacular, striking buildings housing a science museum, a huge aquarium and an events venue among other things. Stroll along the dry bed of the former Túria river to get to the town centre and the cathedral in Plaça de la Reina.
