  • Nostalgic park in the Smoky Mountains, half an hour from Murphy, NC
  • A 10-minute drive from Apalachia Lake and Fields of the Wood
  • Adventure park on site with wagon rides and gold panning
Whatever kind of wagon you’re navigating around North Carolina, steer it towards WagonMaster Ranch Resort for a friendly welcome and a taste of life in the southern states from days gone by. Half an hour’s drive from the town of Murphy, this 72-acre rural park has been running for over 10 years and is all set up with a nod to nostalgia: family-friendly activities (grownups welcome just as much as kids…) at the adventure park include classic wagon rides, skeet shooting, miniature golf and the chance to make your own fortune mining for gems and panning for gold. Non-aggressive paintballing (where you aim at targets rather than siblings) and skeet shooting are also available, as is a mini car track and a bouncy castle for the smaller travellers in your party. All this is available at a discount for people staying at the spacious park, which is an easygoing place that welcomes visiting dogs and horses, group travels and folk planning evenings around the campfire or barbecue (grills for which are provided, along with picnic tables). Facilities are all geared towards making life easy too, including a general store, wifi connection and smart washrooms with accessible facilities. And while the park itself is a fine place to spend many an hour, so are the surrounds – Apalachia Lake is three miles away, and the area is packed with waterfall hikes, watersports and places to ride horses. You don’t even have to organise outings yourself, as the team here are happy to sort lake tours that include whatever combo you like of boat rides, swims, fishing, hikes and tubing.

Local attractions

First port of call surely has to be the clear waters of Apalachia Lake, three miles away. Sign up for scenic boat trips organised from the park or wander up there yourselves to take swims, walk along the lakeside trail, launch canoes or fish for trophy trout and bass. Several waterfall hikes are within around an hour’s drive too: try Fire Creek Falls (50 minutes) or Bald River Falls (an hour). To give your travels a blessing from on high, make the 10-minute drive to the Fields of the Wood for a serene wander around the 200-acre religious park; even staunch non-believers are likely to marvel at the 30-foot-high Ten Commandments monument on the side of the hill. Follow up with visits to fuss over the furry creatures at Ye Olde Goat Farm (half an hour) or the pack of alpacas at Two Crows Farm (50 minutes), or set off on an underground cave adventure in search of the Lost Sea (an hour).
